Howdy everybody! Recently purchased a 2000 SLE with only 44,000 miles on it. Love the car but have started having a problem. Living in Ohio and have recently been blanketed with snow. Since the snow started I now have the Trac Off, the Brake, and Anti Lock lights on. I took the car in for ABS diagnostics and they were unable to diagnose the problem. I was told that they couldn't diagnose the problem because the ABS module had probably gone bad and was quoted a price at almost $1,000. I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were. Going to get a second opinion soon but would love some input.

You need to get the abs codes, there is no reason they couldn't do this with the proper abs scanner.

Well they told me that if the ABS module was bad then it would not give a code. They said that they would have to replace the module just to get the code then go from there. They said there would probably be additional repair when they found the codes. It sounded like they made it up to me.

Get a second opinion, could be they are right or they are afraid of the repair and are leaving it open with you to replace a lot of parts.

More than most of the time when this happens( not all of the time, but frequently is the problem ) its likely that a Hub assembly has gone bad and or the ABS sensor within the hub assembly has failed... But you will want to know which hub is bad before you replace one... Take it to another shop and get another opinion... My 03 SLE is doing exactly this and I believe that I have a right Front failure of the Hub assembly, I heard it moaning and groaning a couple of weeks back, the ABS, TRAC and BRAKE lights were intermittent but are now on solid... I will be replacing that right front hub as I know its on its way out, and will be doing the front struts while I am there..

Do get that second opinion

As a test you could always try to find a used module at a JY or EBay and see what happens. Costs a heck of a lot less and the module should be fairly easy to install. But definately get a second option.
