I have a leaking rear cover gasket and have to remove my tranny and transfer case in my 99 silverado 5.3 z71 150k miles. I have decided to repair it myself and save the $600.00 in labor charges, when the weather gets better. I have listened to many and I am told to get the truck as high as you can off of the ground in your garage. I have jack stands that will get close to 18". I have made a wood adapter out of 1" by 12" by 28" that will support both the tranny and transfer case that uses 2 floor jacks (one below the tranny and another below the transfer case. It looks like I may be able to slide both back and then tilt the tranny down to get by the rear cross member. Will I have enough room??

My question is:

1. Can I remove my tranny and tranfer case together at the same time with the correct tranny jack? I was told I may be able to, if I get a tilt tranny jack.

2. Which should I get ??? a good tranny jack or use my adapter adapter?

What do you think??

If you just need to work on transfer case just remove it.
The hole thing together is a lot harder to take out together and a bear to tilt down in front without the proper transmission jack with the tilt on it.

I need to replace a leaky gasket on the rear covering on the motor, that is above the rear main. Must remove the tranny and transfer case to get to this. I was thinking that it may be easier to take both out together rather than to take each out individually and replacing the gasket between the tranny and transfer case when re assembling.

or should I just take out each?? am I really saving any time trying to take them both out together???

If you have a good heavy transmission jack with a good tilt remove both at one time.
Other wise it is best to remove one at a time.

Or if you have a good engine hoist/cherry picker you can also pull engine.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I show 5.7 hrs flat rate time to R&R 4W transmission.

And 5.5 hrs. flat rate to R&R engine.

Not much difference.
