starting noise

my son has a 96 chevy silverado with the 350 or equivilant engine.
he went to start the other week and it made a clangingnoise fromthe engine. like there were loose parts in side
someone said it s the distributor others the timing chain.
replaced timing chain as it was loose, still making a noise could it be the distributor or something else?

need more details about the engine...miles/oil pressures/use..
timing chain worn sounds like its an engine that needs replacement not repair...timing chain wear on this engine is not normal.

139,000miles cant give u oil pressure wont start. the truck ran fine, sat for a weekend then when he tried to start it made the noise and wouldnt start. a gm mechanic said it may be the distributor needs replaced.
not sure where the noise actually comes from dont want to crank too much in case it is interior problems.
many parts have been replaced normal things starter alternator ring gear was missing teeth was replaced last year this time. ran fine for a year.
any tips on what to lookfor would be helpful

for that amount of miles to have a worn timing chain is very odd..with proper care these engines go beyond 200,ooomi with minor repairs.
remove plugs and see if coolant got into the cylinders..if so when cranking with coolant in the cylinder it may have caused the sudden failure.breakage of internal componets.
low oil pressures/lack of oil changes can cause an engine with this amount of miles on it to be this worn..

no coolant in oil and it has had regular oil changes.

well removed the ignition module turned engine over no noise narrows it down to the module or the distributor

with the ignition module removed NO SPARK...this means the engine has no cylinders firing no force to create a load on the pistons.
with the condition of this engine it is very possible the main bearings spun .

well seems it was the distributor now just setting the timing right and should be good to go

the noise then was miss firing ....normally these distributors gradually fail..as the bearing gets worn ,,,what can you tell me failed in/with the distributor ?
