You'll need to check codes if you don't find a chewed through wire. The fuse didn't blow the second time and the light is still on, correct?
A cheap code reader won't do it (usually), you need something like a Tech-2 or MODIS for 4wd codes. Sometimes you need to take it to a shop, at least for diagnostics. I know people like to do it themselves and save money, but guessing at parts rarely accomplishes that.

i have a similar problem on my '01. went to put it into 4hi and the indicator light just went out. wont come back on and the 4x4 doesnt work. once the service 4x4 light came on briefly. maybe the 2 problems are related?

Nope. Yours is on an '01, and the other is on a '99. Couple that with the fact that your vehicles are on opposite sides of the Mississippi, and that just about removes any chance of the problems being related.

That said, I'd suggest getting the truck on a lift or solid jack stands, then having an assistant engage the TC ranges while observing the actuator at the case. See if the front and/or rear shafts even attempt to move or lock in the various ranges. You can usually hear the TC actuator motor running.
