I was going around many of our towns roundabouts. At the last one i got around it and went to accelerate to speed limit when my car while in gear faced to be in neutral. Now it seems i can only drive in first gear (from 0-20). While driving it makes a small grinding sound and gets louder as the rpms go higher. What can i do to fix this? Do i need a whole new transmission. I did also noticed that my transmission fluid is on add more. I am going to wait for a repsonce back before i add more.

Thank you,
Andrew

Add more fluid and check it till its in the proper range...

with the metallic sounds, the trans may be done.. How many miles on the car?

I also have a 95, My car is at 183,000 and change... The trans in mine is getting tired and once in a while does a 1-2 slip when your on the throttle hard.. Mine is due for a rebuild.. Parts alone can easily run into the $600 area..

Does the trans shift at all? Or do you have to shit it to Manual 1?

I have 185000 miles on it. i never really had a problem with my car slipping gears. I can drive the car in (D), D, 2, 1, but it the speed never goes above 20 mph. All gears listed make the grinding sound i here. I just went out again and noticed small drops of fluid.

I have replaced alot on the car so this should be the last thing i need to do before having a brand new 95 pontiac bonneville.

I feel your pain... I am on my 3rd motor in my 95... First one lived 161,000, as hard as I was on the motor I am shocked it ever made it to 100,000 let alone 161,000 that it lived for... Second one had 80k on it and lived for 1200 miles... The third one has been well over 2 years with no issues.. I think I have 21,000 on it since the replacement..

I will be pulling my trans in the near future so that I can do a rebuild on it...

Just being curious, where are the drop of fluid? Driver or passenger side?

It was two small dots in the front of the car. It was more in the middle as oddly as it sounds right around the oil dran plug area.

where would a good place be to find a new transmission. I dont really like getting used ones because you an never really trust them. I am from Sheboygan, Wisconsin also.

Is it hard to do it yourself?

Its a good bit of a PITA to remove and replace the trans.. As I have done a series of them on the H and C bodies its like a walk in the park for me... But still none the less its a headache at best... There is a lot that has to come off to be able to drop the drivers / front part of the Sub Frame...

The engine has to be supported... and there is a lot that needs to be removed.. This is what my friends LeSabre( same as the Bonneville ) looked like after I got the trans out...

This is the section of sub frame I pulled to be able to remove the trans and the reason the engine needs to be supported..

If you are planning to do this on your own, Air tools will come in very handy.. Ratchet wrenches are a great help as well... Also you'll want a series of 1/2" extensions to get the opposing trans bolt out...

Not sure where to tell you to get a Trans for your car.. If you could get a decent price on a Factory Reman with a good warranty you may be ok..

If you have it rebuilt, you'll want to make sure the shop is very reputable... Not everyone can rebuild a FWD trans without issues... It takes a certain someone to do the job right.. They would almost have to love, eat sleep and breathe transmissions... If you find a shop that talks about the trans and what they can do to make it better, with a very upbeat attitude about doing the rebuild, then you may be ok..

The last 4T60E I rebuilt for my 95 Van, I actually spent about $650 in parts alone... and could have easily gone to $800 in a hurry.. And thats just for parts...

If you have any more questions please ask..
