hi guys,
to make this car I started from a toy.
A company named Mondo corse makes a decent die cast toy replica of the street version of the bmw m3.
These die cast are very cheap (around 10 euros here),so I unassebled the body to save the parts I can use to convert it as for the real thing.
(later on we will talk a little of the real car, to understand better what exactly is this racing bmw).
I washed then the body with nitro thinner,to delete all the huge and heavy glossy paint on it...

so now finally the die cast body is naked.
The mouldings are not so bad, is just a shame they are painted so badly to give it the glossy "licked candy" finish.
The front and the read bumpers are in plastic (front one is trasparent). This will help when will be the moment to pump up the body.

One of the reason I wanted to make this car was cause I saw her racing last month in Monza.
The color is too nice, all the car gives a sensation of power that I love.
As a secondary job I am the truckdriver for Honda Corse, and some of my friends build the real car for the client-pilot Piero Necchi, that shares the seat with endurance italian legend Beppe Gabbiani (ex f1 osella, Lancia Lc2...ac schnitzer bmw m6..)

She was originally build in Germany (wher else? :p) ,with ADAC VLN specs, then finished in Italy by Rolandi Auto,to fit FIA specs for our local tourism endurance champ.

This car has nothing in common with the one at the Chicago expo at the beginning of 2009.U can see it clearly looking the differences in the front wheel arch,as well as the bonnet is different.
The demo Bmw is higher in shape, and overall the car is simply similar to this one... but that was only a show car and (still?) not a true racer.
Some says thats is the first look of the upcoming DTM car, still not seen at today.

The engine is even the v8 4 Liters Bmw based and tuned by Rolandi.
Will be too cool to see her someday at the ring 24 hours....but before I have to convince Piero Necchi in that adventure..:screwy:

as guide for dimensions and shape I got a draw from friends working on the real..

started to drill the bonnet and also tried some fittings of the die cast parts to keep theme a little better.
Also the front part is under work right now..

Wow! Please tell me you plan on making resin copies?

eh eh..hi Martin,
I was thinking to that, but this version is really ONLY the car racing in italy (season 2009 and upcoming 2010 will see about 8 of these cars racing).

The problem is that u cant convert it into the DTM vehicle, cause all the front part is different (ok..actually nothing is impossible),as well as also the other italian ones have minor differences to this car (exhaust do not end back as here but many have lateral ones, as nascars, mirrors in others can be as e36 or e46 serie...).
For those reason I dont think it would be so useful...unless u like the blue italian bmw as I do :):)

Going on in modify the frontal

really thank u all guys.
Not easy to post something interesting here...looking at the stunning level of your works, but I try to do my best :p

I go on with the fwd part of the Bmw,so took some plasticard (1mm) and made it wider and wider, always following where possible the shape I have on my drawings.
The front air intake have to be more open than the toy size, and inside i have to delete almost all the plastic they moulded.
More it becomes plasticard, more for me is easy to rework it.

the bonnet is not fixed..just there to show how it will look when mounted

That's not that bad don't worry
But posting pictures one under the other is better than having to browse to the sides to find the rest of the pictures (and text is also stretched to the edge of the screen in this case) especially when having a small screen :icon16:

Going on with the rear part of the body and remoulding its lower part.
This m3 has the exhausts ending in the tail, while the other ones racing in the "Campionato" have lateral ones as the Nascars cars.
A first coat of tamiya primer is also placed now.

Another long work to do is to clean the internal of the body with my Dremel.
Die cast toys have a lot of metal pins and metal flashes that have to be drilled away..this takes a lot of time, and creates a lot of metal dust all over.

eheh...always thank u guys.
The draw I have is from my friend working on the real car.
It is anyway a generic one and not a real technical draw.I reduced that to 24th scale, keeping some measures from the toy and from the wheels (18 inch).
Seems much more similar to a blueprint, maybe if u try search online in some 3d blueprint databases u can probably find it out (try type BMW m3e92 GTR)

The version in the draw is different from mine one, seems an hybrid between dtm and VLN car,but is the only one I have so..I work on this, checking everytime actual pictures (also cause this car changes to a race to another)

It is not me running so far..is just a car I started 1 month ago..I am a little forward to this point (finishing the rims and finishing to draw my decal sheet for printing)...so soon the updates will be a little bit slower :p

glad u like it.

I had to fix the fitting of the windshield.
In the toy this has a poor fitting cause there are a lot of metal parts,so had carefully to remove all.
Also the front of the car need some more putty mixed with superglue to create a more strong surface to repanel the bonnet lines.

always thank u for the nice compliments guys.

No,think I will not make copies of this car, mostly cause I really dunno if I will ever end it well (is a while to turn a w.i.p. into a r.i.p....u know :cwm27: ).
For sure the car is very interesting, but from here to provide a complete quality kit there is still a lot of work to do.

The last update is for another refinishing of the front end and the build of the rear rims.
They are made by a new italian company (NTM) , and are still not used on any other race car. Those rims create problems to the team during the Campionato cause they had some technical failure, and they broke 2 times during racing.

To build the rims, I started clean carefully the basic ones gave by the toy, and the external part (and probably tire too... we will see) will come from a scrapped Porsche 962C.
The dimensions are nearly ok (just tire is a little too wider), but diameter is ok to drawings and model.
The overall look of the rear is taken.... :p just at today I have no idea on how to make the front wheels...

This is the status at today of my model..now is time to draw the decal sheet.
I will do theme with Alps printer (with the very helpful skill of a friend of mine).

Hope u like it

Thank u all guys, forum support helps a lot in the progress of the wip.

I gave to the model another shade of primer and also spent a lot of time trying to get the correct setup with wheels on.
Being basically a curbside model, I think the external appeal (and setup) will be a vital part for the final look of this car.

meanwhile i go on with the decal drawing work...

Looking at hte pictures of the real car and your conversion side by side I noticed that the shape of the front wheel arch is wrong on your model. It is too big, and protrudes too far - look at the fender gill on the real car - it doesn't touch the arch, but rather the arch starts couple of inches after the gill. Also the ducts behind the arch are curved slightly to mimic the shape of the arch. Its minor, but I thought I'd point that out before its too late.

Also, look a the side skirt - see how lover rib extends all the way to the rear wheel arch? Yours ends up somewhere mid way through the skirt.

Tremendous project! I need to pick one of these diecasts up and see if I could build something out of it!

yes, also I noted that, but tried correct it before and I was not able to, this cause the wheel arch of the toy is a little different than the correct one (as well as if u look at the front lights, correct ones on e92 are much larger than mines.IMO this is the biggest problem and the main difference from the real car).
Also the air intake there near is different in the 1:1 car, bigger, with a different agle and more detailed (inside is clearly visible a small grid, divided in 2).
I tried also to keep the wheel arch higher and do that side corner more angled, but I should open more the wheel arch, while in the real it is as the street version. They just cutted the rear wheel arch.

U know :wink:I try to make something similar, real correct model needs a better base to start with.

The under door area is btw still workable, and I will do it right now(thinking if better use milliput or plasticard L angleg and then shaped).
I shall keep the L angle to the read wheel arch,as in all pictures, and think that is still possible to do
Stay tuned....

Alex message is always too important, so now I am planning to correct the front wheel arch.
I didint note it when build it cause was continuosly looking at the front side, and few images for the other side.

Since u wrote it man, I continue look at that point and tell myself - Alex is right Alex is right Alex is right...WE HAVE TO FIX IT :grinyes:
U are one of my master modellers, Alex...how cannot I listen to u? (or at least try to).
Power of the forum....we will see what will come.

For the moment I started to make the lower side skirt longer, and for this I used some old milliput.
I had an old box open in 2004, but correctly closed it still works well (the milliput is really an incredible putty),and worked it with a wet little wood)
My usual mistake with milliput is that I cut always too much of it and trash a lot, so I used some parts to fix the Pegaso Model figure of my idol Governor Schwarzenegger as Conan the barbarian, still there to be finished (did it with oil paints, love the ugly look of young arnold)

and here we are again.
As suggested before I reworked the front wheel arch.
This time we have up to 2 mm space from the lateral air intake, and I reworked also all the side of this arch.
ALso recreated now a straight side of 1 mm for all the wheel arch, and will add (later on) a metal label.

Also the door handles have been remould.
the dremel is an incredible tool for such kinda works. With a metal ball blade i made the internal bubble and rebuild also the handles with 0,50 plasticard

so now is time to create the air intake over the roof this bmw uses in some races (italy can be VERY hot during summer season).
I will see later on if use it or not, cause in several picture that is not mounted....but I do it anyway

and now a question for u guys.
Its nearly time to make the rear main wing.
The car (actually a prototype always evolving from race to race) used some different wings.
I add 2 pics of the 2 types used...tell me which one do u like more (even if I already did bot the supports for that).

The holed one also has a very bad X cable mounted on, very nice detail.

just let me know...:loser:

Wow...that's brave!

Great job modifying that, watching it very closely.

so..still in the doubt of what to choose between the low and high rear wing..I made theme both
For the supports I used a sheet of alu of the same thikness of the most common PE parts, and remade also 2 metal pins to fix the wing into the back of the gtr.
I probably will choose for the high wing, cause more used and a lot more aggrssive.
