How do I go about finding the trouble code (P code, etc) on my 2006 GMC Sierra Quad Cab, 4.8 L engine, 2wd.
I have a check engine light on, My Dodge lets me cycle the ignition, and gives me a P code.
The shop says I have to bring it in, but if there is a way, I'd appreciate it. I dont want to pay the 35.00 for someone to "tell me" whats wrong with it.
Im fairly mechanically and technically inclined, just not so much on newer vehicles, and not a mechanic.
Thanks for any help.

You'll need a scan tool/code reader to get the codes.

Thanks a bunch. I was afraid of that. Somewhere I read you could "jump" a couple pins with the plug, and it would toss up codes.. but, I hate to try that without someone else already having done it.
