engine cut out

I've got a 2001 3/4 Silverado with a 6L gas engine with 91,000 miles. Twice the engine has cut out on me and only restarted after 30-60 minutes. The first time (after driving for about 15 minutes) it felt like it had run out of gas, missed a couple times, then cut out altogether. While coasting, I slipped it into neutral, started it, only to have it stall immediatly. I parked it, (luckily I was near my house) went back 4 hours later and it ran fine. Today after running for about 20 minutes, it stalled and wouldn't start again until about 40 minutes passed. I ran it ~5 miles and it died again. After 1.5 hours, it started and I managed to drive 10 miles home. One other interesting thing, this last time I managed to get it started today, it had a moderate knock for about the first mile. Any ideas????

Not sure about the knock, but the next time it cuts out you gotta check for spark and fuel. Most common cause going by your description of the problem would be a fuel pump on it's way out. But you need to hook up a fuel pressure gauge to confirm inadequate pressure. Very often fuel pumps don't last 100k miles. sounds like something mine did. same truck description except when mine shut off it wouldn't restart. i kicked the gas tank about 3-4 times(steel toe boots) and it restarted for about 10 seconds and died again. sounds like it will run till your fuel pump gets some temperature to it and then just quits.
