Hello, Just currious I just purchased a 2000 Chevy Silverado 4x4 1500 w/ 5.3L Vortec and added 5qts. like the old trucks use to use but of course the filter on mine is alot smaller. Anyway the low oil light came on. Added another quart as after reading the book calls for 6qts. Checked the stick and it shows exactly 1 qt. low. Should I leave it alone or add a quart?

Thank you,
Allen

Are you sure you added 5 qts? What kind of oil was it? Most times they are only 4 qts. I have only seen Supertech with 5 qt jugs. All other big brands just have 4 qts. That may be why...

I have done that before. Wal-Mart sells Valvoline High Mileage in 5qt containers, but Autozone sells it in a 4qt (gallon) containers. So, I have to be very careful and pay attention to where I am purchasing oil and whether I need one or two additional quarts.

I've bought Mobil 1 and Castrol in 5qt jugs before

your truck does take 6 qts like the other said double check to see what you put in.also maybe the dipstick isn't original maybe there's a GM part # on it that you can check to make sure it's the correct one for your vehicle.

my truck uses 6.25 qts with the larger purolator plus oil filter..
I use 6 qt containers because I have found the 5 qt container does not have 5qts but 4.5qts...

with the vehicle level I check the oil after 30min engine off ,,then add the 8OZ or so to get it at the full line..

this is how its been done since 2000..

As jcat suggests check on level ground and eng off at least 30 mins. Thats because when you run eng oil gets thrown on side walls and can easy show qt low. Thats how gas stations years ago (when they checked things as you were waiting for gas!!!) got you to add a qt. They would show you the dipstick showing qt low.
