Pulled into store and came out truck had no dash lights when key turned on to accessory before going to start position, shut off turned on again and got a little crank and then clicking, shut off and turned on again and it started fine. This problem started 3 months ago. I replaced the battery and it went away, now the problem has come back again. Has brand new battery, tested alternator fine.

Thinking it is starter, but why when I turn on key do I get no dash lights, almost like dead battery, but turn the key a few more times and it starts fine. No other symptoms.

Other people have talked about the passlok system my key looks like a regular key is there something inside of it? I do have the factory alarm system.

Sounds like bad battery cables and /or connections. Cables can corrode inside the plastic sheathing where it's not seen. Next time this happens wiggle both cables around the battery and beyond.

2nd guess is the Ign Sw.

this is as mentioned a battery / power problem...not security or key...battery may be bad, connections, is the battery held down securely ..I've seen many with the battery loose and this is a problem..
next I would check all the connections at the starter ,,and voltages when engine running then off with the headlights on...

don't forget that all grounds must be clean and secure..

When this problem first occured I replaced the battery and it went away for about 3 months. It reoccured and I had the alternator checked it was fine. I checked the cable connections the negative was not loose but I could turn it, so I tightened it. Cables seem fine, as for checking grounds bought A truck for ease of working on it but hard pressed to get my little finger in there anywhere. Any idea where to look for the ground straps, would be appreciated. When it happens feels like Dead dead battery then a few key turns later and like nothing was ever wrong. So far only has happened when truck has been driven for a while. I cant reproduce it. Makes for using it scary will I get to drive away from where I park. Thanks for any help!!

remove the battery terminals negative first then positive and clean these connections with a small wire brush....then install the positive then the neg. connections...the connections must be clean and you must not be able to move the connections...also the battery if not securely mounted will cause these connections to loosen or internally break the battery...........

My freind if you could turn it (neg term) then it was loose. As suggested you should clean those terminals. I would remove terminals wire brush reinstall as tight as possibly.Gm's one major inventive blunder SIDE BATTERY TERMINALS!

Problem solved!
When I replaced the battery originally I was broke down not at home.
I removed the Negative terminal first wire and side post termial were good.
I removed the Positive termial and noticed some white powder. I cut off the rubber boot from the side post terminal and 25% of it crumbled off. Everything cleaned and reassembled. I forgot that when truck key is turned on headlight come on so there is a significant draw even before the starter is engaged. Thanks to all who responded.
