2000 Silverado no speedometer or odometer

I parked my truck with everything working fine, got in the next day and I don't have any spedometer or odometer reading. The transmission shifts fine. I can't see any bad spots in the wiring going into the speed sensor on the transmission, so I replaced the VSS. No help, still no spedometer or odometer. Also since this happened, the battery will drain dead overnight. I thought the VSS might be shorting out, but it is new, do I have a wire shorted somewhere? Where would I look for a wire short, or what else could cause this?

check the fuses in the fuse block lower left side of the instrument panel,,,this may be the instrument panel as you have no problems except the odometer/speedometer are in operative...logic ckts must be bad...all the instument panel circuits are secret so this is unknown whats connected to what...

find ignition 0 fuse pull fuse and see if the battery drain stops,,,if so it probably is the instrument panel..


with whatever you find for the fault post back the defect...this is an odd one..

I have a 02 Buick regal that had the same problem. Couldn't see the odometer or the shift indicator position. There is 5 resistors on the board that become loose or cracked at the solder connection. I resolderd the connections and everything came back on. The resistor that became loose was next to the push button (tactile) switch for reseting the odom trip. I think the board bends a little and after a few years the solder gave way.

I ran out of things to look for so I replaced the VSS, which didn't fix the problem. I was skeptical because the transmission was shifting just fine. When looking at wiring more I realized there are two identical sensors, both on the transfer case. I traced more wires trying to see if I could find a break in the wires. I happened to stumble across a wire loom in the engine compartment that had 6 broken wires. The only thing I can figure out is a mouse chewed them in half. I soldered them back together and everything is back working again. Thanks for all the suggestions!
