2002 300M fuel gage

My fuel gage started dropping to "E" around 7/8 tank, returns to normal operation at 1/2 tank. I believe I either live with it or change the expensive sending unit/pump assembly. Is it necessary to drop the tank or did Chrysler provide an access panel? Any help is appreciated.

Yes, you have to drop the whole tank.

Thanks--pretty much what I figured. I just received a shop manual on disk and will take a look see to make a decision on whather to do it myself or pay. I may also decide that the problem is not so serious after all. Normally, I have always had to use longer replacement hoses in order to reinstall--I guess the tanks must be placed early in the build. I do like a challenge. And my wife likes the car.

You can use the OTIS/EVIC overhead computer for Distance To Empty in addition to the fuel gauge. Also, does the "low fuel" light come on? You should have a couple of gallons left when it does.

You could also have a loose wire somewhere or bad connection at the fuel pump.

Be sure to get the proper pump for your car if you decide to replace it. '99-'01 and '02-'04 are different.

Must be the fuel tank is full. or check the valve. due to fuel leakage it smells like gas in fact. and the fuel pump might be loose connected.
