Intermittent signal/hazard warning sound

Have a 2001 Turbo Bug w/ 160k midwest miles. The headlights on/key in ignition (when vehicle off/ door open) warning sound failed long, long ago. Never did anything about it. Lately, the turn signal and/ or hazard warning sound intermittently sounds at a fast rate when not using either. When using the turn signal or hazard switches the sound (and associated light is normal. The intermittent sound is becoming annoyingly frequent. Today I replaced the hazard warning switch to no avail; the sound continues. Could this be in the turn signal switch itself? How can I narrow this to a specific switch?

Thanks, Dave

I had the same problem on my wife's Beetle. There are a few causes and solutions.

First, the easiest and cheapest is to take some contact spray cleaner(available at autoparts stores) and spray it in the turn signal stalk. Move it around to the different positions, spray liberally being careful not to spray it all over the column cover. Use the plastic hose to really get in all the areas of the switch. Let it dry for a few hours before turning the ignition on again. This worked perfectly on my wife's car.

Second, the turn signal switch may be bad, it has to be replaced.

Third, the relay is bad. the relay is built into the hazard switch, so replace it.
