Revell Renault R23

I started to build this a very long time ago and got as far as prepping the body and painting the yellow. After many months I finally decided to continue with it and add the blue. Scanning the decals and printing off onto paper in order to create masks for the blue areas was the easiest route, so this is what I did. Just in the process of decalling now and once they are all on and dry I will spray a few coats of Zero 2k to seal them in before adding the detail painting and masking for the darker blue sections of paint.
Paints used were Zero Light Blue (similar to TS-23) and Zero Renault Yellow RS01-RE20.

Great work on the little Renault. The yellow looks good, but I'm a little undecided on how realistic it is? I have the Zero yellow Renault paint and I 'think' it looks too greenish and fluo like - any views on that? I'm a little nervous to use it on a 1:12 Renault?

I took these photo's in my spraybooth (with florescent tube light on) and at night so maybe not a true indication of the Zero yellow. I think 'in the flesh' and in daylight it looks a good match for the R23. Maybe could do with being a little more golden for the older Renault F1's......????

Hi again and thanks for all the positive comments. I really appreciate them. I've finished the decals on the main bodywork now, painted the top of the air scoop and sprayed 3 coats of Zero 2K clear. The colour on the airscoop is Zero Rothmans Blue, which I bought originally for my Williams FW16, but it was a perfect match to the blue decals on the R23, handy that..!! I didn't use the decals provided in the kit for the airscoop as I felt painting this part would yield better results. The decals that fit on the bottom of the body (the blue stripe) were a good fit though so I used these. In fact the Revell decals were a real joy to use, a plus point of the kit to be honest. The tobacco logo's were by Crazy Modeler.

I noticed in the 4th picture there is a hard line from the masking and painting of upper cowl. Im not trying to be overly critical or anything as youre a better modeler than me.I too have had this problem and would like to know if you have any ideas on how to get it to look even?

Yes, I noticed that too..!! As I was posting the pictures. It's only bad on one side though. If you look at the other side in picture 2 it's not so noticable.The macro mode on the camera does make it look worse than it is in real life, but I was a bit miffed. I think I removed the tape too soon on that side and it slighltly lifted the edge of the still soft paint. The only way to reduce the step is to use a thinner masking tape and you could also lightly micromesh the edge of the line before the lacquer is applied. Of course the lacquer helps to even it out as well to some extent.

I've made a fair amount of progress since my last post and had a few problems as well. The wheels are too wide for the tyres. The tyres are too shiny. The front and rear wings are tricky to assemble and not such a positive fit onto the body. Aside from that its not too bad. I've got the tyre decals to fit, some small suspension parts at the front, a few aerials and some aero parts to the body and that's about it. I'll be happy to put this one to bed and move onto something else, it's been a pain at times.....
I think the problem with these Revell kits is that they are too small and look very toy like in appearance.

Colours look a bit washed out in the picture, but they're better in real life.

Did you consider sanding the rims in order to make them narrower? Also sanding the tires might help to get rid of that glossy appearance.

Yes, I may take that advice and sand the rims to make them narrower. It's on the front ones that it is most noticeable. You can tell in the picture I posted.
When I have fitted the Michelin logos onto the tyres, I may spray a light coat of flat varnish just to tone down that shine a bit.

Nice work, especially considering it's a 1/24th Revell. Your paint job is fantastic.

Hi Steve! Great looking modell your Revell Renault!
For tires you could do two thing :
- you should check and if it work's, send the wheels to the correct width of the tires.
- you could send the tires with send paper but only on the part with the grooves, the sides of the tires you could spray with some matt clear ( after you put the decals on!)

Even if you don't do this small modifications, the modell is looking great!
