My 2000 1.8 turbo beetle stalls/shuts off when I brake from 2nd gear. Only seems to happen when I step on the brake when coming to a stop from 2nd gear or roughly 20 mph. Has anybody seen this before? the car will start right back up. If I take it out of gear (manual trans) before applying the brakes it doesn't shut off. check engine light doesn't come on.

Sounds like a malfuctioning brake light switch. Have you done the recall on the brake light switch?

Check the vacuum advance hose on the back top of the engine and see if it has pulled off. I was working on an issue with my heater core today and accidently pulled the vacuum advance off, which in turn appeared to lower my idle speed somewhat. When I was confirming my repair, my car kept stalling when slowing down in 2nd gear.....I suspect due to the lower idle speed from vacuum advance being off. My connector hose was badly frayed and I trimmed it slightly and put it back on. Problem went away......

Good luck!
