Is there any upgrades to an 1982 rabbit suspension wise? Could GTI suspension parts fit or maybe something from the junkyard? I am not looking to spend a lot of money just some improvements to the worn out pieces.

Yes, Gti or Scirocco suspension parts would fit.
But I would suggest contacting New Dimensions (http://www.newdimensions.com/) , I know they have an attic full of old mk1 parts they are more than happy to get rid off.
