I have a 1990 chevy silverado x-cab 4x4. The starter went out but when i removed it, it did not have any shims. The new one I got from the parts store came with it. So since it did not have them to begin with, do I use the shims on the new starter or not?:banghead:

Try it with ouy them.
Does it work good and no extra noise?
Did the new starter come with instructions on measuring starter drive clearance or tell you about shiming it?

if you are using a rebuilt starter you may indeed require the shims...with the starter gear up against the fly wheel you need 1/8 inch space...too much space the starter will sing...too little the starter will bind/drag...
I only use USA industries starters and have not had any shim use...the body is correct so that this is not required...
your motor mounting surface for the stater may be erroded if so then a shim may be required ...
