WIP Tamiya 1/24 1976 Porsche 935 Martini livery

Hi!

I´ve been posting a bit on this forum but realised that I´ve not posted much of my own work. So I´ll change that with this Porsche hopefully.

It´s the 1/24 scale Martini version of the Tamiya 935 Porsches. I´m guessing that the molds for this kit were made sometime around the era of these cars (late seventies) as the details and general layout of the kit is not really up to todays standards by far.

I started the kit at the wheels and masked off the outer chromed lip with tamiya tape cut to shape. I then sprayed the centers of the wheels with TS-29 to create a dark base for the gold. After about 2 minutes of drying I sprayed the TS-21 gold lightly onto the wheel. Spraying the gold onto the black when it has´nt dried yet creates a darker, dirtier gold colour. Something very apparent when looking at period pictures of the wheels on these cars. I´m guessing they did´nt put much effort into cleaning back then. I finished off the wheels by applying a dark wash of acrylic Tamiya XF-1 and a drop of washing up liquid (to help it flow like an enamel). Then I filled in the tyre markings with acrylic Tamiya XF-3 also thinned with X-20A and a drop of washing up liquid. the center nut was painted with XF-56. Then to seal everything in and to tone down the shine of the chrome look on the wheels I lastly applied a couple of coats of TS-79 semi-gloss clear.

My main reason for building this simple kit is that I really feel that i need to finish something for once. i have like 20+ kits in various states of completion because I try too hard to get a good result and when the kit is complicated I get burned out on it. Lame but true :headshake.

So in keeping with this Keep-It-Simple-Stupid (KISS) manner of building i don´t think I´ll be changing much of the stock things on the kit. I just want something that will look good on my shelf, but I´m too much of a modeller to just go and get a die-cast. They just don´t do it for me.

A thing that makes me doubt if I can leave it stock is the stance of the cars front wheels. They should be neatly tucked into the arches similar to the rear wheels, but as the kit comes they are flush with, or almost sticking out of the arches. And I´m not sure how it will affect the overall look.:uhoh:

I took some crappy pictures (did´nt have the time to set up the photostudio) for you to look at, maybe you can tell me if it looks OK. I´m not sure.

I picked up this kit too, for the same reasons! But then it has the driver figure - there goes 12 months right there! Ha ha. Are you gonna do the driver? The front wheels look ok to me, but by all means choose your own look. We'll be keen to see how this turns out - seems like a hot looking car to me. If you get a nice finish it should look great.

Hi all!
Thanks for the reply´s!

I picked up this kit too, for the same reasons! But then it has the driver figure - there goes 12 months right there! Ha ha. Are you gonna do the driver? No, I´ve not planned to anyway.

Right, onto the update.

Since my last post things have gone somewhat tits up. I first set about fixing the stance of the wheels. And that ended up with having to throw out the whole front suspension and steering as it just was´nt up for the job. I´m gonna scratch something like how some of the Hiro Lemans kits have their wheels attached.

One word of advise for anyone building this kit....DO NOT USE THE SUPPLIED SCREWS TO ATTACH THE FRONT WHEELS.....IT WILL RUIN YOUR WHEELS!

I almost messed my wheels beyond repair with the small screwdriver trying to get it right. So, if you don´t want trouble ignore fixing the front end....nuff said.

Then onto the next catastrophy....the decals!

These are made by Cartograf so I was expecting them to be a breeze. They were not! I started by applying the decal to the bonnet and as soon as it settled on the surface it started to wrinkle up. And it was the same for 90% of the decals in that session. You can see on the photos how it looks. And no amount of microsol could help this. :runaround:Then when picking up the model after a while one of the non-wrinkled decals just fell off like it had no glue on the backside! i must have had a bad sheet or something was wierd with my paint.

Not sure how to proceed from here, it feels kinda hopeless! I´m thinking of getting some AM decals and repaint the whole thing. Anyone know of a good sheet? The supposedly "easy" kit turned out to be a real disappointment.

Pics of the disaster.....

It looks better on the pics then it actually is...

this was before things started to fall off.....

The dreaded reaction.....

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm158/nr1forme/PICT0046-1.jpg

More wrinkles....

Until next time!

From your pictures, I noticed that your paint surface has some slight orange peel. You probably want to sand the surface flat before applying decal. I think depending on the color of the decal, sometimes any small roughness on the surface gets "amplified" by the decal.

sad news :( but I agree with Helico above. The surface below your decals looks sub-perfect. Also, did you apply a clear coat before applying the decals?

Yeh, I'm sure everyone looking at this is thinking the paint/preparation is the problem. Was the paint completely cured? We can see some orange peel, that's gonna make it impossible to get a perfect decal finish. Also, did you spend a lot of time moving the decals around with extra water? That'll eventually wash a lot of the glue off I would think.

hmmm, I get this reaction every time I apply decals...obvioulsy this is not normal! :eek7: I use a flat brush to stretch the decal constantly during the drying phase and remove all these creases. A hairdryer helps speed the drying time up so you don't have to sit there for hours just watching it....
I don't subscribe to the 'brush it on and leave it' theory with decal solutions, I just don't have the faith required!

I need to agree with the above stated observation. This doesn´t look like the "real" decal mishappes which I have seen plenty off in my modeling years (mostly my faults though - damn you decal devil :evillol:)

In the latter picture - the bigger wrinkles you can get rid off by using MicroSol or the Gunze product (Decal softener).

But the other wrinkles look like the decals snuggled themselves on to the surface of the paint just fine. But as mentioned before this surface is uneven due to the orange peel you achieved.

Solution: Dissolve the decals and smoothen the surface. Maybe repaint and add one or two layers of clear. You will see the decals then will be applied with a much better result.

Try this next time you do decals. Don't use solvents. Try a hot damp cloth pressed firmly over the decal. It will set and conform instantly with no wrinkles. Use a hot damp Q-tip for smaller areas. You can use a hot soldering iron to heat up a wet q-tip.

Hi again guys!

Thank you so much for all the kind replies to this thread! It really helps.
Next time I´ll pay more attention to the paint surface. I´ve even bought some Mr. Hobby 501 Topcoat so I won´t ruin the livery. Anyone know how long to leave this before polishing? as I´ve heard it´s kinda soft.

This thread has suddenly taken an unexpected turn. RobiJ offered me his decals and I gladly accepted his offer, so in a couple of weeks I´ll probably have a nice and smart looking Martini body! :iceslolan

So the threads not dead, just put on hold for a while:naughty:

So keep looking, soon stuff will happen!

And I really have to commend and thank RobiJ, without him this never would have happened. I owe you one amico!

Cheers!

Emil,

concerning the Top Coat 501, I’m used to wait at least one week before polishing it, but I’m leaving in a humid area and paint take a lot of time to fully gas out.
I read somewhere people rub the 501 after a couple of days only. My opinion? Don’t rush, you’re doing a fine job on this car.

Concerning the rest, I personally consider AF a place where to share our passion and, when possible, to help someone without expectation. Nevertheless, thanks for your kind words, really appreciated.

Looking forward for the next step :)

Ciao: Robi

Well, this did´nt turn out to be the "fast" project that it was supposed to be..

One year on and I´m still hammering away...I´ve just finished scratch building the new front suspension. Nothing very detailed or fancy. Since it´s supposed to be a curbside only I did´nt put much effort in this area...

But in my book it looks right so it´s all good! :)

Now hopefully I can pick my pace up a bit...

Hi Emil, I have the same kit also. I've read your WIP and must say that the start you've made on the wheels is excellent. First dissapointment for me were the wheels. You can't see through them but with your technique they look allright. Then your troubles with the decals started. My technique is like many others. Once the decal is on the prepped body (with paint and laquer) I use decalsoftener and a flatheaded brush an carefully move from centre outwards. I may also carefully use the hairdryer. Well, I hope you can get this Porsche on the "finished" list because I like this car very much. Good luck...

Right, I´m chugging along with the Porsche and at the moment it is that fun phase of sanding and priming and a little more sanding and some more priming..... But hopefully I should be able to put the first paint on in a day or two..

Hi again!

It seems that my sanding sessions are coming to an end, the only sanding left is the smoothing between coats.

I´ve managed to get some white on the body today, the rear wing element and side mirrors are to follow in the paint shop.

I primed the body with Zero Grey Primer and sanded with 600 to 2000 grit in between coats as new flaws kept appearing. All in all there must be about 5 or 6 coats of primer on the body. When it all looked pretty good I made the final sanding with some 6000 grit Micro Mesh and some Tamiya Coarse (red) compound to get some depth in the primer.

After a thorough clean under running water with an old toothbrush and washing-up liquid i dried the body off lightly with an old cotton T-shirt and let it dry overnight.

Then followed the color coats.

I did´nt use a white primer before proceeding to paint the white basecoat as I reckon that painting white-on-white is very difficult, as it is very hard to judge the coverage and it´s also very easy to get runs, because you can´t really see if it goes on too wet somewhere until it´s too late.

I decanted some Tamiya TS-26, Pure white. Thinned it out with some
Mr. Color Leveling thinner to help it flow and to avoid having to use a high air pressure. Then I shot 2 generous coats on the body shell. Leaving about 2 hours drying time between coats.

And these are the results:

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm158/nr1forme/PICT0021-1.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm158/nr1forme/PICT0022-3.jpg

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm158/nr1forme/PICT0024.jpg

I will probably shoot another coat in a day or two to give me some margin of error when it comes to flatten the color surface a little and get rid of the texture. Which I will do in about 3 or 4 days when it has set a bit more.

Then it´s time for decals..

Until then!

Cheers!

Hi again!

This build is chugging along at a snails pace but I´ve finally found some time to do a little modeling as I have some time off work at the moment.

So I´ve started decaling the Porsche. A very tense job as the cartograf decals are very thin, which is good. But you have to be very careful not to tear them when adjusting them to the many curves of the body.
I´m really just taking my sweet time and I´m having a really good time seeing the livery take shape.

And I think the livery suit the car and it´s lovely shapes very good.

It is always hard to place decals on curved surfaces, but Martini livery worth it.
I made this model years and years ago, will see if it is possible to find new spare decals to rebuild it.maybe cartograf and not alps printed.

Or convert it in another 935 version .. :naughty:

good job so far Emil

Hello Again!

I just want to share some more progress on the Porsche.

The project that was supposed to be a quickie is´nt finished yet 3 years on.....

But now I´ve turned up the speed so I hope to finish within a few weeks as I´ve got vacation at the moment. :)

The decaling is finished and the body has got some TS-13 clear on it. The shine is actually quite good so I wont go to town polishing it since the real cars were no concours examples if you know what I mean. :p I´ve got the rear wing left to paint but it´s no biggie.

The inside of the shell is brushpainted with Matt Black acrylic from Lifecolor. A paint brand that I can really recommend for those who use a brush alot. Really good stuff!

The interior is on it´s way...

Enjoy the pictures!
