Hello everyone,
I would like to introduce you all to one of the best models I have ever seen. It’s got hundreds of parts which fit like a dream. I got it when I studied in Korea, and went through a great hustle to transport it to London in my hand luggage (but that’s another story)
I have been working on this kit for quite a while now but I only took some pics recently.
I will start with a quick mock-up of what I have got sofar:
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC15826.jpg
And some modifications I have made in this kit:
Tamiya’s leather-like material on the seat was replaced with real leather (one single piece instead of 3 like Tamiya wrongly advices)
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/ferrarif190108.jpg

http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/ferrarif190072.jpg

Entire monocoque was covered in various patterns and sizes of carbon fiber and Kevlar decals . In fact it took me several trials with different scales of decals until I got it right. Despite the large scale of the model, cf pattern shouldn’t be seen from more than 50 cm. since the older cars were using very fine patterns
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/ferrarif190067-1.jpg

http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/ferrarif190076.jpg

http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/ferrarif190082.jpg

I added some plumbing for hydraulics
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/ferrarif190087.jpg

I also started playing with the electronic box, it is more-less half done. I’m pretty happy with it so far, especially that tamiya had only 5 thick cables in this area.
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/ferrarif190097.jpg

http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/ferrarif190104.jpg

Steering wheel was given a baking flour treatment to simulate suede texture. I had some major disaster with a decal on the wheel so I will have to get some replacement decals (which I have to buy anyway since Marlboro decals in the kit are in completely wrong shade of red). It also have to be detailed with some nuts and washers.
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC15843.jpg

That's pretty much all I have accomplished so far but I am working on it almost everyday now so stay tuned for another update soon. I am looking forward to hearing your comments and advice
P.S. My name is Emil – do not hesitate to use it
Thanks

I am very happy to see a WIP for this model here. :runaround:
I build it fourteen years earlier... strait of the box.
As you see in this photo from my case.

I plan to build a second (more detailed model).
So I follow your build. :smokin:
Good luck

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I’m glad you liked my work. I’ll try not to let you down and keep up working on the model as much as possible.
I hope you won the auction the Ashman. If you did you might want to look for this superb book as well. It is almost necessary when you build this kit:

Ok time for another quick update.
This is what I have done today:
First I assembled shock absorbers and front suspension.
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC15848.jpg
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC15855.jpg

Then I finished the electronics. I am particularly happy with how the cables rolled in a tape on the left side of the box came out (although on the pics it looks a bit weird).

Hi Guys,
Another quick update. Today I have finally assembled the front suspension. http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC15992.jpg

Also plumbed shock absorbers
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC15987.jpg

Panels were painted with Zero paints and while for some reason the colour looks a bit bright on the photos, in real life it matches my reference pics spot-on:smile:. This is the first time I used Zero paints but I think from now on I will use only Zero.

http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16011.jpg

That's it for now.
P.S. The fitment of shock absorbers seems to be the weakest point of this kit:headshake. I tried my best to make it look more realistic but I'm still not too happy with it:banghead:. Also the fragile shock absorbers are to thick and fit to tight IMHO - so be carefull if you're building this kit

ALways a joy to see these big old kits being built, and this one is going together particularly nicely. :)

Just thought - this kit is nearly 20 years old, how did that happen?

Yep, Tamiya's large scale F1 kits seemed to be ahead of their times when they were first released and quite frankly still are, especially that the quality of new kits in terms of details is constantly deteriorating:shakehead

OK, time for another quick update.
During the last few days I managed to wire left side pod. Unfortunately Tamiya completely ommited it so I had to scratch build it myself. Unfortunately I couldn't find sufficient references for this area so I had to improvise a bit. Electronic boxes are from 1/20 scale Williams FW13b and Ferrari F189, decals on the box and the radiator are from F189. http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16064.jpg
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16065.jpg
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16074.jpg
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16068.jpg
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16098.jpg

Tamiya chose to mold the floor in one piece but on most of my ref pics the car is serviced with the rear floor taken off. Plus it will look better when displayed with the floor aside the car to better show the engine detail. Also it would be a shame to waste all the great ref pics of the floor. So I decided to cut it. Luckily Tamiya's design allows you to do it pretty easily since both - front and rear floors are mounted with screws to the monocoque and the engine. Here are the results:
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16045.jpg
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16083.jpg
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16063.jpg
And couple reference pics:

Hi Guys! First of all thank you for your encuragement and your interest in this WIP:) Today it is realy going to be a tiny update. I was looking at my reference and saw the badges on the dash. since they were quite thick I couldn't use decals so I printed them on paper with home printer. That is how they turned out. Tell me what you think
Refs first:

Hello everyone! Long time without an update:smile: This is just to let you know I have not given up on this project and was just getting some necessary wires, bolts etc. before I can start the engine. I also discovered an AMAZING new internet shop, which specializes in car model parts. They have a huge sellection of high quality detailing parts for a fracture of the price I've been paying on other popular site (plus no minimal order and free shipping:smile:). Check them out: www.snchobbies.co.uk (http://www.snchobbies.co.uk)

Anyway, back to the model. So far I've painted the engine block and gearbox and started adding some nuts and screws throughout.

Hello again,
Over the past few days I managed to paint and partialy asemble the exhaust (it took a bit longer than expected since a little disaster stroke when I was finnishing painting the very LAST piece:banghead::banghead::banghead: - why does it always happen at the end? Now I'm sure I won't finish it before the show in Donnington Park but perhaps I'll display it there as a WIP:) Anyway, this is the final result.

Hi Guys,
Another update (finally - this project have been going rather slow lately)
Since the last update I've managed to assemble the rear suspension and did some wiring on the engine. It finally starts to look serious or at least busy:)
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16729.jpg
Although I'm not looking forward to aranging this Italian spaghetti:lol::
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16765.jpg
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16740-1.jpg

I'm particularly happy with the throttle spring which was included in the kit - I think it looks real cool
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/SNC16665.jpg
Since Tamiya ommited most of the wiring and plumbing on the engine I also had to build some connectors, which I think improves the final effect, what do you think?
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/connector.jpg
The kit is missing screws and bolts in crucial places (like those circled below) so I had to add them myself and I can tell you that this is one of the most exhausting jobs on this project - especially that many of them had to be made of 2 parts. I still have dosens to add though:banghead::banghead::banghead:
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww115/Emson667/f190/screws.jpg

I'm looking forward to hearing your comments (all - good and bad) and questions

That's it for now, hopefully the next update will be of the chassis and the engine together:wink:

Cheers

This is looking excellent - great work

I also have a question.

Looking at the photos, some of the screw heads look as if they are just regular 1/1 screws. Are these screws that are included in the kit to hold it together? If so, do they look like that on the 1/1? They seem kind of....ugly in comparison to the rest of that beautiful engine/suspension assembly LOL
(I am not meaning to criticise your work in any way - I am just curious :) )

Thanks for pointing it out klutz_100. Unrealistic screws seem to be a problem with all Tami large scale cars. The thing is though, that the model is pretty heavy and suspension arms are therefore made of metal + the fit is tight so it is almost imposible to replace them with anythn else. So I tried to at least improve them (blue circle) as much as I could and While I'm not entirely happy with the result I think they look much better than the naked kit ones - what do you think? However some of them - like those circled in green are the right size - they will be replaced with the gold ones though. Also some of the p. etched ones (red), while looking quite big are the right size.

Thanks again for your help klutz_100, please let me know if you spot anything else:)

Truely an artwork in progress.....an inspirational build if ever I saw one.
JFYI, Scale Hardware (http://www.scalehardware.com/) have some very useful (functional) nuts and bolts too...
Some very small sizes which suit 1/12 really well. Only downside to them, in some sizes, they are quite short...
But they maybe suitable to some of the suspension components....

Keep up the great work mate...."bookmarked".......

Fantastic engine detail, great wiring!! Is the exhaust finished yet?
Yes, I won't be adding anything to the exhaust. I know there is this huge gap where all pipes are connected to one flat pipe, but when I realised how big it was it was to late to fix. However, I should have added the clamp in this place (thinking about it, it would be really easy - its just a thin strip) and some weld seams like on the real thing though:banghead::banghead::banghead: On my references there wasn't any heat staining so I decided not to add any either and go with this rather smooth, new finish:smile:
Anyway, thanks for pointing that out and stay tuned cause if everything goes according to plan I'll be posting another update tonight.

Cheers
Emil

Today's proggress:
Brakes are installed and plumbed. I'm just making some decals for the calipers since the Tami ones are old and useless:banghead:

Body panels around the engine covered in cigarette foil

And some minor details added to the cockpit area

And this is where I am at the moment:)

What kinda stand are you going to make? not that the Tamiya paint jars look bad, but a stand might be a little more stable. Stunning work, if it wasnt for the tamiya paint jars it looks like a 1:1

Thanks for spotting it Mate, I was so used to the jars that I almost forgot to make proper stand - I'm sure judges would apreciate it:smile:

Structurally it is the same as the one from my ref photos only slighty taller to show the undertray better.
And that's what I made for the cowling

Hi Mate,
I'm glad my work inspired you. I also have been inspired by someone's 1/12 scale Mp4/6 and might start my fujimi soon.
