was there a recall?

I have a 2006 1/2 ton silverado. the upper steering shaft is bad.. one person said he thought there was a recall. I on ly have 55000 on it.. any help? thanks

no recall. TSB. they have never even tried to fix it, been running for years with same issue. There's GM participation program up to 70 000 miles on repair costs, but as much as dealership will charge you, you will be better off buying NAPA ISS and replacing it yourself. 10 minute, though awkward, job.

you are a wise man. i have feelers out for new Tacoma myself. I am tired way above my eyebrows of this continuous repair project. yes, i know, this will follow with a buch of "hale(hail?) Chevy never had a problem" posts, it's ok.:sarcasmsign:

anyway, reason for buying a NAPA ISS is that they have their own design that is better than OEM one. copying OEM design in replacement simply makes problem come back some time down the road.

There is more than one GM ISS. For years the original and the identical replacement were flawed. The replacement failed the same way as the original.
GM redesigned the original. It is a new design. It's not the same one that most people installed as a replacement. It addresses the problems of the original. I've read good things about the replacement.
The NAPA part resembles the original. Maybe better but not a new design.
The new GM ISS is relatively cheap.
I'd take a good look at the new GM design and read the threads. I posted a link previously with a photo and price.
I have no personal knowledge of ISS solutions. I bought my '99 new and it's still clunk free.

i bought OEM shaft off internet for $67. dealer wanted around $200 for same one. I think, NAPA's is around 70 plus tax. same shaft, NAPA distributes Dorman product.

Dorman: It says in their ad that the GM ISS needs frequent lubrication. The GM ad says "This is a permanent fix with a teflon bushing inside that does not require any more grease." It's as if the Dorman ad were really old or they deliberately chose the old GM design to compare.
Since the genuine GM design is $55 that might be a good way to go. The Dorman "Close Tolerance Double-D" might work too. It sounds so futuristic too!
Again, some people on the forum read the first post and the last post and thought all the GM parts were the same. They're not. They're also not $200.
If a dealer asks you to pay $200 for a $55 part it's a sign that they don't want your business.

glad I could help. It's real easy job. you have to be a contortionist some, as you have to lie down on your back to get to the pinch bolt under the steering column. 15mm head.
then, get a stool, and get to the same size bolt under the hood. on my truck, there are TWO bolts, one for ISS and one below it, as it has another short shaft, connected to pitman arm. so, in my case, it's upper one of the two. undo it, then slide ISS through the boot in the firewall. mine went in easier than trying to get it out. it collapses during this.
then simply install new one in.
definitely remove battery cables. you'll be working close to air bag, one never knows. got to be careful around those.
