2001 Alero - SVS/Anti-Lock/Trac-Off lights onBren610 05-19-2009, 10:33 AM I'm new to this site, so this may have already been discussed, but here's my issue. I have a 2001 Alero. Shortly after winter the SVS, Anti-Lock, and Trac-Off lights came on. Everyone is saying I probably need to replace a wheel hub, as the speed sensor is wired into it. I was also told that uplugging the wires to each tire would make the lights go out, but all that does is turn ON the Brake light (as if the E-Brake was engaged). Any thoughts and does this pose a problem for getting it inspected in NY? Bren610 05-19-2009, 10:43 AM I should elaborate a bit on something. Two different people told me that unplugging the connectors to the wheels (and leaving them unplugged) would turn out the lights. When I do that, the lights stay on AND the Brake light comes on (as if the E-Brake was engaged). Would this suggest that it's not the wheel hub? One other point I wanted to make is that I called a garage about this and they said that the ABS problem has nothing to do with passing a NYS inspection. Is this true? Iflylow 05-19-2009, 12:00 PM I know in IL, if the service vehicle light is on, you will fail. The people who told you unplugging the connector at the hub will turn off the lights are wrong, period. When the computer senses an incorrect or missing input from one of the 4 wheel speed sensors, it turns the ABS/Traction control off, and lights their lights. It may also light the Brake light. All those lights will also come on if your brake fluid is low, so check that first. The connectors at the hubs are known to leak, so check all 4 for corrosion before replacing anything. Also look carefully at the wiring, as far as you can see it. Pay special attention to anywhere it runs over or near any moving suspension or steering parts, as it tends to break in those areas. Check the fronts first, as breaks there are more common. If you don't see any problems, have someone with a TechII or equivalent ABS capable scanner pull your codes. Then you will know which hub to replace, otherwise it's a guessing game at several hundred $$ at guess. Bren610 05-19-2009, 01:05 PM Thanks for the info :) I checked the Brake fluid and it was on Min. There is about a centimeter between Min and Max, so I'm not sure if that would be causing this or not. Just out of curiosity, is there a way to disconnect the ABS system from the computer to turn out the lights. I would think that if the the system isn't connected, the computer doesn't notice there's a problem. I tried pulling the Anti-Lock fuses, and that did turn out the SVS and Trac lights, but left the Anti-Lock on, and also turned the Brake light on, so that didn't really help much. I don't really care about having the ABS working, I just want them &@#$ lights off LOL! Bren610 05-19-2009, 03:07 PM Welp, frustration gave way lol. I couldn't find a way to simply disable the lights so I removed the dash, opened it and removed the Anti-Lock and Trac lights from the board. I left the SVS light just incase. Might not have been the best solution, but my dash no longer looks like a half decorated Christmas tree now LOL. Iflylow 05-20-2009, 05:55 PM It would have been much easier to add some brake fluid IMO. Even if it didn't fix your problem, you need some. dwbailey 05-21-2009, 08:11 AM I have had this happen to me a couple of times. It is your wheel bearing hub assembly. I am positive. You're gonna have to replace it. No choice. :shakehead MN1 05-29-2009, 11:46 AM The last post is correct and you can actually find this code listed in your Alero manual (I think it is in section 3-?? or 6-??) You can find it by checking the manual index.) When both the SVS Anti-Lock and Trac-Off lights come on and stay on - this is code that your wheel bearing is out. Unfortunately, I had to have 2 replaced (approximately $325 each) in the last 10-11 years on my 1999 Alero. I learned this the hard way as after paying for an anaylsis and replacing the wheel bearing the first time ----The two lights came back on after a few months, the shop told me the sensors were probably incorrect so I just kept driving it. However, if I would have known about the codes, I could have the shop check the new wheel bearing and they would have determined it was bad and replaced free under the 12 month wheel bearing warranty. (It's hard getting shop guys to talk to you in you don't know the right questions to ask.) Good luck to you! undersc0re 05-31-2009, 10:20 AM I have replaced 4 now and I am at 160,000km Everytime I replaced them those 3 lights came on, I haven't had a ebrake light come on with those 3 lights which were all caused by a bearing on the front, maybe it is telling you bad bearing, and it is on the rear? maybe ebrake pads are worn? I would pay close attention to bearing noise especially on the highway, it will be more noticable turning one way(not always though). Do a quick inspection of your wires and the connections at each wheel. Maybe unplug them and plug them back in and see if the light goes away after a while. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
