btw sorry for this off topic question but a friend of mine got this tamiya 1/12 caterham super 7 which is built halfway.. the engine hasnt been built at all and everything is still in the box and nothing is damaged, hes willing to let it go for like only $60usd.. a good deal or not?

Good deal I think, if the body is ok.
It 's a great kit...
And the retail price is something like the real one :smooch: (You can buy the real car as a kit, if you don't know)!

Good job guiwee!

Carbon in late 70 's and early 80's? i don't think so. :headshake
Mclaren in '85 I think is the first carbon F1 car. (Not 100% sure for this).
As well, great job. :smooch:

mclaren in 1981 had a car in all made with carbon but i think later f1 cars fox example this renault had a few parts with carbon... and very nice job:)

Seems like a good deal to me.My hobby shop had one for about $300 on the shelf..still there too.(lol)
Thanks guys for nice comments. As far as carbon-fiber goes this kit is being built straight from box with very limited extra except for a few wires and hoses.Besides as these guys told you there wasnt any in the early 80s.
Doing the gearbox and rear suspension turbos and turbines now..somewhat difficult exhaust. Not sure what to paint it any ideas?Anyone?Ill let the forum decide(lol). This kit just begs to be super-detailed as my skills dont really lie in that realm ill do my best.
As a side note the overall kit is just great. As mentioned before this is my first big scale and will not be my last. The pieces fit as well as if not better than the 1/24 scale. The p/e,wires and hoses are a great boon to the modeler. Not to mention my lhs had it on sale for $70.If only i can find another one as cheap

Sanded and primed body cowling upper and lower.Drat!! a whole can of tamiya white primer was used for the two coats..sanded with 1000 grit up to 1500 grit, between coats.Looks shy due to terrible photo skills..trust me its not

Think maybe my bmf on the turbos are a tad too thick.I had to use black electrical tape to secure the two joins between the radiators and turbo units. As it was quite flimsy to me.Wanted to do a black wash on the radiators but with the p/e in place it doesnt look right.Maybe next time paint them flat black.Or just dont use them.

Oh my goodness!!!! Diisaster has struck. When painting the upper cowling i guess i didnt mask it off as well as i thought there are two yellow spots which have to be taken care off.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Not only that all the yellow has orange peel in it.This is totally not acceptable.Ill have to sand it then remask and paint again. All that and i havent even painted the white yet.I tried something different this time.Instead of painting whole car white i did it this way and masked all the white primer. Not to good apparently.Any suggestions for the hard edge line between white and yellow? At least the lower cowling turned out well.Just masked and sprayed ts-17..not sure if thats right.Didnt want to use testors metalizer alum. due to the fact that that stuff wipes off to easily(dont want to use metalizer sealer.just another step in process)

Nice job ,I wouldn't worry about your little hickups, but for the hard mask line between the yellow and white I would use 2000 grit and rub the line down or better still rub the yellow to reduce the orange peel but don't concentrate too much in one area or you'll rub it away then it won't be uniformal so if or when you respray the yellow it'll show up.but the 2000 grit usually helps me on my hickups like that!

oh forgot to say it's best to do the lighter colors first so I would've done the white all over first then the yellow.

Looks good- nice work, and it's a terrific looking kit. The engine looks clean and nicely detailed. But since you asked , here are some thoughts.

The vinyl electrical tape for the intake like joiners is a clever idea, it looks good. But my concern is that it might well start peeling up on you at some point in the future. Applying just a little ca on the sticky side should help keep it down permanently for you.

Also on those joiners, typically they will have two hose clamps each on them- one close to each end. 3/4" would be a very reasonable size in 1/1, and in 1/12 it works out nicely to 1/16". If you can cut along a rulers edge and cut a long (several inches) strip of BMF 1/16 wide, you can then cut that strip into shorter lengths to apply to the joiners. This will give you a nice consistent look to the hose clamps. If you have trouble sticking the BMF strips in place, I like to use Microscale's liquid foil glue to supplement the foil's adhesion.

The compressors look good in a cast aluminum color. I would definitely recommend painting the turbines in a darker, heat stained color. Metallic grey, oversprayed with clear orange and clear smoke can recreate this look nicely. Contrasting the colors between the hot turbines and cold compressors tends to make turbos very realistic and interesting to look at.

Thanks a bunch Mr.MP.As for the elect. tape im way ahead of you thats exactly what i did..just a dab of ca glue.As far as the turbines and compressors go it might be a little to late to do anything now but ill keep that in mind for my next build. The bmf i tried to cut thin strips but they wouldnt stick and when i tried ca it just kinda messed it up ..i got frustrated and said screw it and used bigger piece.Looking at it now i realize i should have just took a break and come back later.
On another note what is the rating system for and how do i get at least a star?

Really nice looking build so far.

Following on from the hose clamp tips, try using decorative chrome tape instead of BMF. IMHO, it looks far more convincing than BMF as it has some thickness and doesn't conform so readily making it look more like a real metal strip. The stuff I use is made by Sellotape, which is a UK product but I'm sure you must be able to get something similar in stationery stores over there?!

I've used it to replace chrome plating on cylindrical items like 1/12th motorcycle forks too - looks superb.

well dont have much to say.didnt make much progress this weekend, due to holiday, etc.Managed to sneak in a little time.Just some shots of nose cone and unfinished gearbox and partial rear suspension.Wish i had another upper cowling. Can i just call tamiya and have another shipped(lol)? As i was looking ahead i seem to be missing some pieces from the kit.The throttle catch spring and a coupla small bolts for the rear brakes.I guess im gonna have to try to scratchbuild something. Is it any way i can call tamiya and work something out?

On a side note i dont like these decals. The wing is painted alclad chrome straight from the can. How'd i do?The base is ts-14 black..should i have used an enamel based black or does it matter?

Okay got some work done over the weekend just a couple of test shots of body to lower cowling. Also mounted rear suspension and gearbox. The rear spoiler has some very large filling issues which my skills havent gotten to that point yet.Ive tried. Not sure which way to go either putty or ca? So didnt even try.Started striping the chrome off the wheels and priming them. Will decal lower cowling tomorrow

Wow, it's starting to look very good. The silver finish looks great. Don't worry about any scrappiness too much, the overall effect is still impressive, and if you have the courage to do some weathering around the engine, etc, it'll make the whole thing look very realistic.

Ok guys this is it.Im done or at least done as im going to be
the exhaust was a @#$%@ to install correctly.I recommend doing the whole exhaust compressors and turbines all in one shot very difficult to install with lower cowling installed as per instructions.Consequently i broke the left hand oil line and the right hand compressor and exhaust got dislocated.Maybe you can see it in the photos.I know that i should probably fix it but im lazy i guess(lol). Also the upper cowling doesnt sit right once mated.Dont know if its my building skill or just a poor fit.Seeing as how this is the tamiya kit its probably me.

Yes they are once again i dont know if its a poor fit or me.The reason i say that is because basically the rim is longer than the tire.I kept playing around with it but no luck ..maybe i should have done a prefit. Thinking on it now maybe i could have ground it down a little i dunno.
You guys are kind..i see a few flaws but i wanted someone to point them out. 1. there is a retouch on monoque which stands out(on left side)
2.the rear brake cooling ducts still have a seam in it which i tried to touch up ..horribly to me
3.That exhaust wont win me any contest either(the left side you can really see the seams on header part.Dont you lose points for that in a contest?)
Maybe im my own worst critic..but i try to live up to the excellent builds i see here
