How to remove head bolt from cylinder head?dakotaisthedog 05-16-2009, 01:46 PM I'm replacing head gaskets and LIM gaskets. 2001 GTP 3800 sprchgd. I have both heads off, but how do you remove the one head bolt from the head, because the manifold stud is in the way?? SEE PIC. I have torque specs, but what is the correct sequence of putting head bolts back on? thanks!!! GTP Dad 05-16-2009, 05:38 PM Remove the stud from the head. You can do this very easily by double nutting the stud and turning it out. As for the torque sequence it is: 6 1 3 7 8 4 2 5 Don't forget to use new head bolts due to them being torque to yield and make sure you put sealer on the threads. dakotaisthedog 05-16-2009, 05:55 PM ahhhh, I should have thought of that when I was trying to get the head off in the first place! Would have saved some heartache. thanks! I have new head bolts and threadlock. The torque specs I have is 37 ft./lbs plus 120 degrees. Is that correct? And then 11 ft./lbs for the LIM? BNaylor 05-16-2009, 06:33 PM The torque specs I have is 37 ft./lbs plus 120 degrees. Is that correct? And then 11 ft./lbs for the LIM? Correct for both the cylinder head and LIM bolts. However, technically the extra 120 degrees for the head bolts is using a torque angle meter and not turning 120 degrees based on observance or perception. dakotaisthedog 05-16-2009, 10:33 PM Well I managed to get the manifold stud out of one of the heads, but on the 2nd one, the stud snapped off in the cylinder head. :sly: I'll probably just take it to a machine shop down the road to have it drilled out rather than try it myself. I don't have an angle meter to torque the head bolts, so hopefully I'll be ok just eyeing the degrees of turn. ?? Here's a pic of the honing grooves in the cylinder wall. Decent for 135k miles?? file:///C:/Users/Bryan/AppData/Local/Temp/moz-screenshot-4.jpgfile:///C:/Users/Bryan/AppData/Local/Temp/moz-screenshot-5.jpg vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
