86 caprice. 305 to 350. drive shaft lengths?m3gas3th 05-09-2009, 04:55 AM i am going to put a 350 with 350 turbo trans into my 86 caprice classic that has a 305 with 700r4 and i was wondering if i would have any problems with the lengths of the drive shafts. i dont know much about cars but i asked the guy putting the engine in if there would be any problems doing it and if i would need extra money to make the transition and he said i might want to find out if the drive shafts are the same length. thanks for reading, i appreciate any advice, and have tons more questions if you have time. toddman67 05-09-2009, 09:26 AM Take a measurement on both transmissions from bell housing to tail shafts, that should be a good indicator. m3gas3th 05-09-2009, 12:21 PM thanks todd, that sounds like a last minute, last resort option.. but if it comes down to it thats what i will do! and i appreciate your help!! BUT, i still have to drive this thing!! and id hate to tear the motor out and it not be the same!! anyone know for sure?? silicon212 05-09-2009, 01:13 PM i am going to put a 350 with 350 turbo trans into my 86 caprice classic that has a 305 with 700r4 and i was wondering if i would have any problems with the lengths of the drive shafts. i dont know much about cars but i asked the guy putting the engine in if there would be any problems doing it and if i would need extra money to make the transition and he said i might want to find out if the drive shafts are the same length. thanks for reading, i appreciate any advice, and have tons more questions if you have time. You will need to get a driveshaft for the TH2004R trans to make it work, provided your TH350 has the common length 6" tailshaft. toddman67 05-09-2009, 02:10 PM Silicon212 brings up a good point, spline size etc. If the 700r4 is good? keep it in the car. Employing such tactics as registering sites with our name .net, or .org Companies that in the past have copied graphics off of our website and posted them as their own. Mimicing our prices, our "levels" and even going as far as to copy our information WORD FOR WORD off of our site and using it as their own. To our customers, dont be fooled by cheap imitations. There is only one bowtieoverdrives.com, only one 700R4.com We have been in business a long time and have been the leader in GM rear wheel drive transmissions and truly make the finest overdrives anywhere. We havent paid much attention to the goings on of other companies as we dont get our information from them. We dont need to search anyone elses site for information on transmissions we are the experts in. For example, if you were to go to www.bowtieoverdrives.net it would redirect you to another site, one that is in NO WAY affiliated with Bowtie Overdrives. In our opinion this is a shady way to get customers who are looking for quality Bowtie products to stumble into another shop and be fooled into thinking they are getting the best. SO, is the 700r4 really all that or what? or should i sell it and get the 350 and trans for basically free?? i understand the 305 and 700r4 is better gas mileage and all that, but i want power! theres always hydrogen systems later.. CD Smalley 05-10-2009, 07:24 AM 700 has a low first gear, plus the over drive. You be much better off in the long run with the 700. m3gas3th 05-10-2009, 11:44 PM so u think the 700r4 would be better on the 350 rather than the 350turbo? and if so, would it go in there with no problem? silicon212 05-11-2009, 12:15 AM so u think the 700r4 would be better on the 350 rather than the 350turbo? and if so, would it go in there with no problem? Absolutely. Look at my sig - my 350 has been augmented for more torque than stock and the 700R4 (which, might I add was pulled from an '86 with 305 in '06) is loving every minute of it. The 700R4 is the logical choice - it offers the best 'off the line' performance of any of them, and has overdrive, and requires absolutely no modification of any other systems to work. CD Smalley 05-11-2009, 07:14 AM +1 to Silicon's last comment. Use the 700R4. toddman67 05-11-2009, 04:09 PM I agree, Keep the 700r4 in place and just swap the engine. Less work! Less is more. m3gas3th 05-12-2009, 11:40 PM saaweeeet.. thanks guys. i guess that pretty much wraps that question up. anyone wanna buy a transmission? hahaa. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
