94 lumina, 3.1 with 4 speed auto...

issue? cold starts--when you first start it, or any time you start it cold, it runs REALLY rich, causing misfires, and black smoke. It does self-recover from this, and revs up, and clears itself out in 5seconds, to 45 seconds, depending on tempurature outside (it Is alaska after all) it was 80 the other day, and cleard up in 5-10 seconds, it's 60 today, and it took about 15-20. It also has some hesitation, especially when engine is cold, but not just when it's cold--it's there all the time, but just more noticable with a cold engine.

it's always done this, so, it's nto like it's undriveable, but it IS annoying. any idea on what might be causing this thing to ... be mean to me?

has new plugs and wires, that's about all i've ever done--other than clean throtle body and a few sensors.

This can be caused by a leaking injector for one, also a bad fuel pressure regulator, look inside the vacuum hose to the reg. see if there are signs of fuel. If ok get a fuel press. gage on it and see how fast the pressure leaks down. Also watch for contamanted oil here, gas may have thinned out the oil.

Bad CTS can do this too, it can be reading colder than actual, forcing an absurdly rich mix.

Have you tried using "clear flood mode" when starting? ECM going bad can cause this flooding problem also.

1.) feul pressure regulator fine.
2.) cant really check for stuck injectors, so it's still possible.
3. replaced CTS, as i suppose i should have ages ago--because i hav e the fans hard wired to a toggle, because they do NOT work, under any condition--no matter how hot the car gets, or even if the AC is on.

still does the exact same thing as it always has, floods @ start.

as for clearing the flooding, that doesnt really work... if you give it gas, or dont give it gas, it will run rich the exact same amount of time regardless--so, no, it doesnt clear the flooding like that, it just has to run for a bit, and it clears itself.

and ... NOW, i'm sorta wondering about the fans. i always assumed a new sensor would fix my problem, but aparently i was wrong... the thing can go into nuclear meltdown and those fans would never come on. and the old trick of turning on the AC doesnt work either (mostly because the AC doesnt work, i suspect)...

SO, anyone got any more ideas on the flooding?... or any new ones on what to do about the fans? (replaced the 2 wire temp sensor under the throtle body, head there's another--does it control anything relating to the fans? .. and do these cars REALLY have to be 220+ before the fans kick on?)

Fans don't come on until 220+ deg. farenheit. If dhecking them, besure to have external gauge in system to track temp.
