'05 Express AWD Manual Front Hubs?

I have an '05 Chevy Express G1500 AWD Cargo Van and was wondering what would be involved in converting it to manual front hubs? I love the AWD, but it would be really nice to be able to disengage it for highway use to get better milage and for increased maneuverability in town.

Thanks

If you have AWD you have to stay with it.

Even if you could change over it would not help on gas mileage.

Hmm, Bummer.

If it was possible though, why wouldn't it increase the MPG?

But it would increase maneuverability and get rid of that lurching bind at lock to lock, right?

Also, just a thought, what happens if i remove the rear drive line?

You can not make a 2W out of a AWD.
Any attempt will mess up the transfer case.

Why do you think it would help gas mileage?

If it is crow hopping you may already have a transfer cas problem.
Has transfer case ever been serviced?

Well if it only has to drive two wheels instead of four then it should get better mileage right?

I'm not sure if it has ever been serviced, I just purchased the van recently.

It's not lurching that bad, just a little when it's lock to lock.

Is there anything that I can check? What do you mean by serviced?

If it only has two wheels then it would be a bycycle.:sarcasm1::lol2:
And it would get better mileage.

2W or 4W gas mileage is not going to change that much on a AWD.

Service is change fluid and check for proper fluid level.

What transfer case does it have?
ID tag is usually on bck of transfer case.

Check owners manual or repair manual for service time and proper fluid.

Good luck

It should be a NV136. It uses GM AutiTrac II fluid (blue) exclusively.

If you're seroius about going 2wd, swap in a NP 241 or NP 231 from a 4x4 truck. If you get the right one your drivrshafts will fit. Otherwise, you'll have to shorten or lengthen them. You will have to fasion a shifter on the floor. If you use a NP 233 and the required wiring from a donor vehicle, you can skip the shifter and have push buttons. With either set up you 2wd, 4wd HI, Neutral, and 4wd Lo range.

I'm not sure on the front axle disemgagement, but you may be able to use one from a full size truck. I have a Astro with a NP231, manual shifter, and an axle shaft with a diconnect from an S10. It uses a 4x4 Posi-Loc cable to engage the front.
