We just picked up a used oo beetle. the overhead temp/clock module is inop. I am a chrysler master tech 10yrs. I checked for power to the conn. there was like 2 or 3 power wires, don'r remember. i don't have a schematic. fuses all ok. Is there any checks for it, is failure common in these. it does nothing not lighting up or anything. Also trans seems to shift quickly into 2nd gear, is there any trans throttle adjustment cables? Thanks for any ideas :) Also what type of fluid does to trans take, i thought about doing a flush or filter and fluid change on it?

You need to replace the clock itself. It's not overly common, but yes it does have occasionally.

Congrats on your new purchase. Your first question has already been answered by SC2ner. Your second question about your trans problem is the trans adjusts to your driving style. The previous owner may have dogged it a bit. Your trans fluid and filter I would only use genuine VW fluid and filter. Any other fluid will almost certainly ruin your transmission. Depending on the vehicle mileage trans service may be due anyway.
Other fine points to service on your toy.
1. Timing belt and water pump.
2. Spark plugs
3. Fuel filter
4. Air and Cabin filter
5. Oil change and filter(Sludge remover)
6. Fuel injection cleaning
Enjoy!
