My 1999 Beetle has developed an annoying problem with the drivers side door. Every once in awhile (sometimes random, and sometimes after hitting a bump) the door ajar warning sound turns on. The door is closed firmly at this time. I have tried to fix it by adjusting the strike plate so the door is closed "more" but that did not solve the problem. I can stop the warning sound by pulling the door handle inward when I am seated. A pain in my... Please help if you can.

the problem this in one of the microswitch that carries the lock, one must disarm it, and to change that microswitch, is the one that this in contact with the post of the door, that ignition tambien causes that at times itself be not activated the alarm, or that upon activating the alarm, descend not the insurance of the door of the conductor Free translations are nice. The microswitch is built into the door latch. Basically the locking mechanism. You have to replace the latch. It's a common issues on the beetle, golf/gti, and jetta. Basically they all share a lot of the same parts, but the body is different and some things are different (window regulator, lights, switches, and so on).

Check this link - it explains the problem and has a great picture of the latch mechanism....it is possible to replace just the microswitch for next to nothing.

You cannot get the micro switch separate. It's built into the latch. Only way it comes.

You're probably correct....but a generic one can be made to fit apparently. Here is another link which explains pulling the lock apart and diagnosing the actual fault...it's for a Passat but they are virtually the same. If you can fix it yourself you save a couple of hundred dollars but you've got to like pulling things apart.
