Hey everyone,

I am looking to buy a used 9 pass. SUV. Are '05-08 expeditions pretty reliable? How about compared to suburbans? Any bad years or other things to watch out for?

thanks.

Those have the 3 valve 4.6s and 5.4s and are a VCT engine (Varaible Cam Timing) known for oil sludge buildup.Ford screwed up on these engines and I cannot believe it.They show a filter in the factory shop manual and it is in the cylinder heads. The filters are not available and there is no part number for them. The expeditions do not get great fuel mileage. The suburban gets better fuel mileage with the 5.3.

my girlfriend has an 04, it's been reliable so far and it does get pretty good mileage for a 9 seater...try to go for the one with the 5.4 though, because her's has the 4.6 and it does lack power

The 5.4 is a gas hog and yes, they are know for blowing out spark plugs in the 3 valve 4.6s and 5.4s.

I have an 2005 with 26,000 miles and the only issue I have has so far is the blend door for the rear heat and a/c .
I purchased my Eddie Bauer 5.4L in May of 09' it was a used fleet vehicle with 16,000 miles. It use more gas than my old WindStar but i knew that when i purchased it.

Good Luck.

I have a 1998 4x4 xlt w/ 4.6 it has 150,000 miles on it. Lacks power and get about 14 miles per gal. replaced normal wear and tear parts, but overall very reliable and roomy.
