Security Light on; car starts fine.

Hello,
My 2002 SS's security light is now staying on but the car start's fine. According to the manual, a blinking light is likely a bad or dirty key and will prevent starting. A solid light indicates it needs to go to the dealer to repair/replace the PassKey II system.

I am the only owner so there are no aftermarket alarms or bypasses installed. Any thoughts on this? Is it really a bad module or could it be something else? I don't want to bypass it because I like making it has hard a possible to steal. Also, I always fix my own problems and only go to the dealer if its free or absolutely necessary.

from my experience the blinking security light means the resistance in you key is nearing its set limits. have you tried a new key with the proper factory resistor chip?

the security light on solid with the engine running is caused by a failure of the passkey sys. it has several components that can fail. the most likely cause, a worn out ignition cyl, this is insanely common on gm cars. big keycains and lots of keys are the usual culprits. you can do this yourself. the new ign cyl will come with new keys. the dealer will try to talk you out of it, but its as simple as pluging the new one in and turning the key and leaving it in the run position for 3 min. well you gotta install the cyl too, but thats not too hard either.

vats strikes again!.. unless your sold on the factory security, just get the bypass.. 60 bucks at jegs. or buck 99 at radio shackif you're tech savvy. you just need to know the resistance of your key chip, one of 11 possible combinations. got sick of mine going bad so just bypassed it
