significant sputtering @ 40 mpg ++

While driving yesterday I noticed some significant sputtering, loss of power and 1 backfire at about 40 mph. I was low on gas but the low gas indicator had just come on. I filled it up and the problem was still there. I also noticed the rotten egg smell coming from the exhaust.

I intended to bring it to a shop this morning but decided to drive around for about a ½ hour and the problem was minimal at first and then it seamed to correct itself. I’m assuming I would see a check engine light come on if it was a spark plug, oxygen sensor or catalytic converter.

the car has 120,000 miles on it. would the check engine light come on if its the converter? I should also mention that rotten egg smell has dissipated today.

I think your doing the right thing its probably a bad cat, is anything loose inside it shaking around. If you change it get a high flow cat and ubend delete its worth the money while your at it. Oh and how many miles does it have? if it ran lean a lot it can damage the exhaust.
