Hi Everyone! I just found this forum tonight and I think it's great. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who has or have had problems with their Jeep.

I have a 93 Grand Cherokee w/ 4.0L. I think the trans is a 42RE (I think?). It had stopped changing gears correctly and I was told it had to be rebuilt. After that was done and the tcm changed also, it doesn't always go into overdrive. When I first drive in the mornings the overdrive off switch in the dash is not lighted and it shifts into overdrive until I'm 2 miles down the road, then the light comes on w/o being touched and goes out of overdrive.

I've changed the od off switch in the dash and that hasn't corrected the problem. I've also had the wiring harness to the trans checked with no luck there either.

Has anyone had a similar problem or know of something my mechanic and I may be overlooking?

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Id take it back to the place that rebuilt the transmission and ask them what is going on.

Thanks Scotty,,

I have taken it back numerous times and the guy who did the work keeps giving me the run-around, always saying that it's not anything that he's done and he doesn't know what to do. This has been going on for over a year now.

Take it somewhere else, and let them take a look at it. Hopefully you have a warranty from the first guy. Question - does the light stay off if you click it off after 2 miles or does it keep clicking off?

The warranty has already expired from the first guy. I've also taken it to several others with no luck.

I don't have control over the switch. It comes on and goes off by itself.

I'm not the best electrical buy, but it could be a loose connection or bad wiring. Are there any faults in the transmission power control module?

usually when the O/D OFF light comes on it is because the transmission is overheating. I recommend getting the transmission flushed and go from there.

its maybe the overdrive solenoid and its inside the transmission!!!
try to have the fault code in your tcm
