Minnesota Winters vs My GTPtblake 03-15-2009, 09:02 PM Hello Guys and Gals. Had a rust spot starting on my GTP right above the rear passenger wheel. Here are a few pictures. These were all taken about a month ago. The spot first became noticable back around Christmas when one piece of paint chipped off. Since then it just kept chipping, so I needed to get it fixed. This one doesnt look so bad. Just looks like a little chip. http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2616/44/39/500370123/n500370123_2020361_4029334.jpg This one looks a lot worse. As you can see, all the paint under the fender is peeled off or rusty, and the bad spot is actually bubbling up. http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2616/44/39/500370123/n500370123_2020362_2527530.jpg Viewed from the ground up. Not a very good picture due to lighting, but you get the picture. http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2616/44/39/500370123/n500370123_2020363_5282365.jpg $300.00 Later, and going a week driving my parents Camry :shakehead, I finally have the rust spot fixed. I brought it to my Body Guy. As you can see he does amazing work. He owns his own shop out of his garage, and the waiting list for body work is 6 months long. Troy cut the bad spot out, formed, and welded in a new piece. Then he primed and blended paint to match the rest of the fender, and cleared the whole back fender. Looks really nice huh? :naughty: http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2616/44/39/500370123/n500370123_2020364_1056255.jpg Another angle.... http://photos-f.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-snc1/v2616/44/39/500370123/n500370123_2020365_7411897.jpg Ground up shot... http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2616/44/39/500370123/n500370123_2020366_4369235.jpg And just a couple more for fun. Today the temp in the midwest was 57 degrees, so I took the better part of the night while it was still light outside to was my car. http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2616/44/39/500370123/n500370123_2020367_2869757.jpg http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2616/44/39/500370123/n500370123_2020368_5171282.jpg What do you guys think? If you live in central MN, PM me for the number of an amazing Body Guy. troy1 03-15-2009, 10:36 PM Nice! rust sucks, how are your rockers? doctorhrdware 03-15-2009, 11:45 PM I am in Chicago and my drivers side rockers are full of holes. The passenger has bubbles in the paint, so that side is ready to start to get holes like the drivers side. lefty1120 03-16-2009, 07:12 PM I'm moving to northern Minnesota this summer........well...back to Minnesota after 23 years away. My '93 GP saw two South Dakota winters but has been down in Lousiana since '95. It will NOT be driven during winter. My '05 Grand Prix and '05 GMC Sierra 4WD are Lousiana vehicles also....but at least the truck will be driven in the winters (wife's ride). Where in Central Minnesota are you? I'll be in Pengilly between Grand Rapids and Hibbing. .....ah...Maple Lake I see.....northwest of the cities. tblake 03-16-2009, 08:33 PM Rockers look good Troy and drhardware (becuase they are covered by plastic) LOL The g'f's rockers are all rust on her 2002 se. SHe's currently on the body shop list. We are working on getting a set of rocker covers together for her from a 4-dr gt or gtp. Then my body guys is going to clean up the rust on the rockers, prime, paint, and then prime and paint the rocker covers and apply them to her SE. Not sure how much longer untill I can get all the rocker covers together. I have to scavange some junkyards. I'm pretty picky about them. We have a full set except for a passenger side. Lefty, thats correct, NW of the cities. If you need body work done, I can recommend a guy. tblake 03-16-2009, 08:36 PM One more picture. Just for fun! I was a little bored today at work. I always park way in the back. http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5812/image1zls.jpg doctorhrdware 03-16-2009, 11:23 PM Actually my are not covered, just by paint and that is it. tblake 03-17-2009, 12:52 AM yep, I'm sure mine are all rust under the plaster covers. So far nothing is showing up, so I'll just deal with it when it does. I bought my car a few years ago. When I got it I found a sticker in the drivers door from a dealer in Kansas, so for some reason I think maybe my car spent most of its life in kansas. Which might be why its not all "cancer". Drhardware, is yours a GTP, GT, or SE? You should look into a set of plastic rocker panel covers "ground effects". Like I'm doing for the g/f's SE. I will snap a few pictures when the project starts. VR43000GT 03-17-2009, 03:58 AM Eh, rust sucks no doubt. However, living in Minnesota it is no surprise. When I do happen to take my VR4 out in the snow instead of the SL I always wash it down just to ensure nothing like that starts. I specifcally kept the SL so I could drive it during days that would have an adverse affect on the car but I could not resist taking it out a couple times with the AWD...give me a break...it's the first year with my VR4 haha. doctorhrdware 03-17-2009, 03:23 PM Tblake, it is a SE edition. dlcnws 03-25-2009, 09:11 AM yep, I'm sure mine are all rust under the plaster covers. I've been into the dealer and they won't touch any rust jobs. tblake 03-25-2009, 06:05 PM I had to scavange salvege yards and online for people parting their GT's and GTP's. The door ones pop off with a sharp putty knife begind it, but the longer panel covers you need a phillips screwdriver and then the whole mount... Check CL for people parting GT's or GTP's in your area. Thats going to be the best bet. troy1 03-26-2009, 09:53 PM have you never looked under the car Tblake? LOL Mine are just starting to bubble on the under side. I had all the plastic crap off to clean all the junk out it's amazon how much they collect. tblake 03-27-2009, 05:29 PM Yep, mine isnt so bad to tell you the truth. The body/pinch welds/inner fenders are pretty good still. (far from perfect, but pretty darn good all things considred being in MN.) vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
