85 slows down wen i push da gascoupeboy 03-08-2009, 03:43 PM it drives n sounds good but wen i try to speed up it slows down like its gone stop n cut off on me...any ideas y its doin that Blue Bowtie 03-08-2009, 03:57 PM That sounds like a lean fuel problem. If this occurs only when the engine is cold, check the choke setting and operation. If this occurs after the engine is at full temperature, the choke is not likely involved. That would be more likely a problem with fuel bowl level, rich stop adjustment, clogging passages, or possibly an accelerator pump. coupeboy 03-08-2009, 10:38 PM That sounds like a lean fuel problem. Either thing would cause these symtoms. 82CapriceClassic 03-09-2009, 11:09 AM yea my car cuts off when i turn the steering wheel a certain way to the right hand side...like it'll completely die but all the power in the car will be on..like my in dash will still be playing and everything else...but when i cut the car off and cut it back on it cranks right up coupeboy 03-10-2009, 08:53 PM i just put a new fuel pump on it Blue Bowtie 03-10-2009, 10:06 PM Did that solve the issues? coupeboy 03-13-2009, 11:11 PM Did that solve the issues? no tha issues started after i had did that Blue Bowtie 03-14-2009, 12:48 AM The new pump might have slugged the carb with lots of sediment and debris. That would easily explain any lean mixture problems. Sediment in the main metering wells and jets will starve it for fuel, as well as possibly damage the accel pump, etc. j cAT 03-14-2009, 09:52 AM The new pump might have slugged the carb with lots of sediment and debris. Blue Bowtie 03-14-2009, 12:06 PM If the filter is clogged but installed properly (with the spring), a good (new) fuel pump will unseat the filter and allow fuel in at about 4 PSI of pump pressure. That would allow unfiltered fuel in, of course. The later model E4MEs have paper elements, and the older model 4MV/4MCs had sintered bronze elements. Both should have had relief springs since the '60s. Apparently, there is adequate fuel to start and idle the engine. If the bowl level is high enough to idle the engine, with a working accelerator pump, that should prevent the type of tip-in stumble he is reporting. It might quickly go lean, but also might not return to idle once the throttle is closed. j cAT 03-14-2009, 07:28 PM If the filter is clogged but installed properly (with the spring), a good (new) fuel pump will unseat the filter and allow fuel in at about 4 PSI of pump pressure. I have had this occur before ,,the carb filter pluged with gas tank rust ....then on acceleration the engine would fade...start up fine but when the throttle was depressed it caused this problem... obviously a vacuum leak would cause a lean condition...there are a lot of hoses on that engine, a bad hose in the wrong area will give him this ... the other item's are the carb base gasket, and the EGR being defective. coupeboy 03-14-2009, 09:16 PM If the filter is clogged but installed properly (with the spring), a good (new) fuel pump will unseat the filter and allow fuel in at about 4 PSI of pump pressure.
