pwr. window cable..98 intrigue

my 98 intrigue window quit working. I took the panel off and found the cable that pulls the window up and down was broke. I thought i could buy this metal cable on its own but found out the whole assembly needs to be changed. The dealer wants $550.00 canadian.
Does anyone know if i can buy the cable by itself somewhere?
Can i possibly make my own cable?

you should be able to get the regulator just about any decent parts store. I just checked NAPA online and they list it with motor for between $129 and $144 US, depending on what door it is. The estimator lists it as about a 1-2 hour job.

I am not sure what you are calling the regulator. All i really need is the wire wound cable. It is a seperate part that detatches from the motor. Everything else still works fine.

The thing with the cables, pulleys, etc, is called the regulator. You can buy it with or without the motor. The Oreilly site has pics, and is a priced bit lower then NAPA.

Welcome to hell. LOL Seriously though, just search for Intrigue and Power Window ... you'll see that this is a common problem and it will repeat itself due to the poor design of the cable system. I will never buy another car that uses anything like this in their power window. I replace one every 4 months on the 2000 Intrigue.

Go to eBay and search. You can use the power window regulator for Intrigue or a Buick Regal, they are identical. You can usually find the regulator only (everything except the motor) for $40 or less. I found one for $20, once. Your motor is fine.

I'm guessing the little plastic tab that holds the cable to the assembly broke. As soon as that happened, the window slipped and failed in the down position, and the cable got chewed up when it got wrapped around the pulley as you tried to raise it back up. Am I close?

I've gotten to the point I can do a swap in about 20 minutes, including pulling the door panels and putting it all back. I've decided to do the next one blindfolded just to prove I can do it.

The units sold on ebay are junk. I went through two in 90 days am on the third. Ihaven't had a refund for returning the other two either. If this car didn't have 137,000 and run like a swiss watch I'd derby the thing.:banghead:

I'd check the little plastic clip that's mounted on the track that the metal cord clips to that is if the metal wire is not snapped or bent. If I'm correct I do not remember which car did this to me I'm pretty sure it was my 99 Intrigue but the clips just broke and I was able to go to the junk yard and just get the clips and fix it and that was like 5 years ago and it still works. I don't know why people freak out about these Regulators of 2 Intrigues I've had I had 1 go bad on me.

I agree this thread is old.

I've had to replace 2 regulators on mine, used cheapo Ebay units and no real problems so far, on the back one it makes the window move back and forth a little bit, but the only reason I noticed it is because of my tint, otherwise it wouldnt be an issue.

Either way, even a quality replacement is much cheaper than a dealership or mechanic, and its an easy fix requiring minimal and common tools.

I've been using those cheap Taiwanese Ebay units as well. No problems from any of them. The one I did on a Pontiac looked to be built better than the original GM one in fact...

I have noticed that bad window requlators plagued all car types.

When opening and closing doors make sure the windows are all the way up, or down.
The cable on the window regulator will bounce around, the slamming of the door it will bind-up. When you use the electric window, the cable will break.

Hi guys picked up two of the window regulators from a site off of the internet they were just like the one's that were in my car. work good and they only cost 50 bucks each. plus 26 bucks to ship. when i called gm for a set they wanted 700 each. I told them they were nut's, and where to stick them.if you guy's want to know where to get them i will look in my file's for web site. just don't have that info with me right now.email hossttracks@sasktel.net (brad)
