This is a particularly special build for me as it is part of a tribute build.

This kit belonged to a recently deceased modeller from the USA. His wife has given away his collection and several of us are jointly building the kits and sending photographs to his widow as a tribute.

The P34 is a car that has always intrigued me and inspired my admiration not just because it was one of the most striking and unusual looking cars in the history of F1 but also because of the innovative thinking that was the driving force behind that unique look.

"Project 34" took everyone by surprise in 1976 and was also a hair’s breadth away from being the first turbo charged F1 car. In the end, despite its forward thinking and potentially far-reaching design, it was destined to a short career that lasted only two seasons because…no one wanted to make the tires for just one team.

The build will be 95-99% OOB and I will be painting it with Motip auto spray can eyeball-matched to my reference photos. I will also try using Future floor polish for the first time to see how that performs as a clear coat.

I have been accused – nay, flayed! - in the past for making my posts too long so this time round I have a new, tight lipped approach :grinyes: (Any questions will be answered though :) )

I just love this car as well, I remmeber seeing it for the first time during the summer of '76 whilst the British GP was on TV, I was at the time with my mate playing with a mountain scalextric set, I turned and shouted WOW! look it has 2 wheels at the front..hehe

Since then I was hooked on this car, the livey, the style, everthing about it. I will be watching this build with much interest, and a nice touch as a tribute.

Is this the Tamiya 1/20 kit? the reason I ask is the only 1/20 P34 is the '77 version (at least that I know of) and I see you plan to do Scheckter's '76 car?

Superb start.
Cheers

This car is so ugly, it's actually sexy :D Can't wait to see more!

Did you ever find the S27 PE set for this?

Finally! I was beginning to worry that we'll never see the WIP of this build. :D
Nice job ob getting rid of that orange peel effect. Any idea why it happened?

What's your impression about using Future to clear coat it?
That's enough questions, I'll concentrate now on following you build this interesting single seater. :)

Thanks Colin. It's nice to know there are others who share my enthusiasm for this particular car
Since you are from the UK and I'm guessing are about the right age ( :) ) Send me a PM with your email and I'll send you a little film I put together about this car - I have a sneaking suspicion you might enjoy it and it should evoke some memories for you LOL

Yes, it's a Tamiya kit. I recently discovered that this was actually Tamiya's first ever 1/20 scale kit and was in fact responsible for the scale even coming into existance! It was originally a motorised kit which is why a) they came up with the 1/20 scale to accommodate the battery and b) my kit has the removable battery panel in the floor and a gaping hole for the switch LOL

The 1977 Monaco version which was recently re-released by Tamiya was a follow up. They chose the Monaco version because that was (I think) the only race in the '77 season where Tyrrell used the '76 body. Tamiya did upgrade the kit though to include the suspension and some other changes.

This car is so ugly, it's actually sexy
I agree with you that it is sexy (but not ugly). It's the only F1 car with "six-appeal" IMO :loser:

Sadly, no. I didn't manage to find the p/e set (yet). I want to build at least the '77 version as well so maybe I will manage to find it one day. Or someone will let me scan theirs so I could etch my own set.....

Nice job ob getting rid of that orange peel effect. Any idea why it happened?
No idea at all although I suspect that spraying it in a cold and draughty garage during a freezing, snowy humid weather didn't help at all!

Excellent subject and a great cause for building this kit. Greedily looking forward to more of this model. I have top coated 2 of my models with Future and was very happy with the results. One thing for sure, it made my shop smell great.

1.can you use future w/o airbrush..
I can't but SeanyG for example sure can! Check out his builds. They are what prompted me to play around with this stuff in the first place

2.how long did you wait between coats....
Not long. This stuff dries pretty quickly anyway but in my case it was really fast because I use a dehydrator. I was coating every 10-15 minutes IIRC.

3.where did you get fuel lines from ...
It seems that the captions on the photos are not self-explanatory after all :evillol:
I used clear heat-shrink tubing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat-shrink_tubing). I held it over a candle just as if I was streaching sprue and as it softened and contracted, I pulled it lengthwise. Easy as pie.

3.... and where did you connect them too..
Thin air :D

4.ive built many models and not once have i ever filled injector pin marks, do you do it even if it cant be seen?
If you are sure they are not visible I agree, why on earth fill them? However, in this case most are visible and it was simply easier to just fill them all rather than dick around trying to figure out which would be visible and which not...

The engine looks terrific! The wiring and the clear tubing give a very realistic look.
Also the Future clear coat looks good, I'll have to give that a try!

PS: Do you use a dehydrator that has a reliable thermostat or one of those with only On/Off settings (dangerous for a plastic kit)?

PS: Do you use a dehydrator that has a reliable thermostat or one of those with only On/Off settings (dangerous for a plastic kit)?
It's a two setting (hi-lo) on/off machine. I tested and calibrated the temps for all levels before using it on a real kit. Temperature in the hottest place in mine is 50-55 degrees centigrade - well safe enough.
TBH I wouldn't have thought that any dehydrator would be dangerous to a kit. They are after all meant to dehydrate and not cook :) In any case, if you found that yours were to get to dangerously high temperatures, it is easy enough to modify the chamber with spacers and ventilation holes to moderate the temperature.

So is what you´ve been doing since your last WIP. I never thought to see you build a F1-car. But then again - you build anything - as to be seen with your dioramas, etc.

The porject comes along nicely. I understand that you shoot the Future with your airbrush-gun. Did you ever try to apply it with a brush? How would you describe the consistency of Future?

The engine is marvelous. Nice shades of gun metal and dreyish metal you have picked out. And your fuel lines are something else, yet again... Great stuff.

Yes, I did try brushing it once or twice but ... :banghead::banghead: Sean on the other hand only brushes it on and the results speak for themselves.

Klear/Future is just a little thicker than water and a little thinner then iced Vodka :D

I had no idea you could do that with heat shrink tubing, and not distort it. How did you make the fittings that the lines connect to? Btw, the slight weathering and washes are perfect. Hard to believe this engine is really plastic on the inside.

Most definitely a one-to-one situation :D
(although fine detail work gets a bit tricky after the third coat ;) )

Aren't spark plugs wirings a bit oversized?
Yes, I think they are a touch large. The wire is supplied in the kit and the cam covers are pre-drilled to accept it so I didn't want to bother fillling the holes and re-drilling. I don't think it looks too bad though.

How did you make the fittings that the lines connect to?
Thanks, Les. The injectors are Tamiya kit parts. Nicely molded and separate parts.
I was going nuts trying to find some tubing in my workshop - anything I could find was way out of scale and not flexible enough for the tight space available. Then I had a brain fart, gave it a go and it turned out to work beautifully. The shrink tubing I have is very soft so the resulting product is extremely pliable and is easy to weave through the engine. I guess this would make good radiator piping also...

Yes, pretty much the same stuff I guess....
Alex Kustov also came up with a sweet alternative to the knife - two scalpel blades taped together with a styrene spacer between them.

I too have this model and i want to try a detailed projectlike this im not good enough to make my own stuff so ill probably have to buy the p/e sets off web and maybe the tubings and fittings and hoses and stuff.
When undertaking such a task how do i go about it? Ill try to get ref. pics. from web and here but how do i know what size hoses and wires and tubings to buy? Id hate to buy all this expensive stuff and find out its too big or small. i.e. how big are the coolant hoses?
Also all of the wires are they all connected or just into a bulkhead or something.
Figuring out this stuff is a headache to me but im willing to undertake the task to please the modeling powers that be.
i was gonna try to ease into it by just doing some plumbing on engine then i said hey i can prob do some brake lines too!..Are yours connected to anything or just thin air?
Do you see where im coming from with this ???
Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated

Amazing work! The engine + transmission are impressive.

PS: Why don't you want to try to painting the Union Jack? You can try to do the masking and see if it's worth painting. What's there to be lost? Some masking tape or BMF?

What's there to be lost? Some masking tape or BMF?
A bunch of time when there's no need to :)

but im willing to undertake the task to please the modeling powers that be.
There's only one "power that be" you need to please and that's yourself.
If you don't want to do it - don't do it!

Some of the tubing and wiring for the engine was included in the kit and the rest is just made up with stuff I had around the workshop - mostly 0,4mm wrapping wire. The only paid for aftermarket items on this build are some Detail Master braided wire and fittings and some generic photo etch bolt heads and Duzu fasteners.

Most of the wiring (but not all) is loosely based on what I could see in reference photos I found on the web and got from friends. The majority of the ends just disappear into space in unseen places. As for sizes generally, the only useful guide to remember is that 1 inch in 1/1 equates to approx 1mm in 1/24 so 1/4" hose = 0,25mm wire etc. Other than that, ref photos of the car you are building and lots of Googling are your best friends.

Personally I don't get too uptight about 100% accuracy. I just tend to pick on a couple of individual details that I'd like to work on for a given project and the rest is just to try and create some semblance of reality. If it works for me that's all I need :)

PS I do have a tendency to always pick detailing items that are often not visible in the finished build so it IS worth your while giving some thought to where you are directing your energy! (of course, unseen details are great place to practice and hone your skills)

I really wasn't happy with how the head rest came out so I re-worked it.

My reference photo shows aluminium black plate with riveting and a some kind of holding strap.

And you call this 95% OOB?!

PS: I was wondering when will the OOB stop and the detailing madness take over! :D

Quite nice Steve, the appeal of any single material/threatment, starting from alu sheets, casted metal, painted body are very convincing.
Now, say me who done the job :D

Jokes apart, very bravo!!!!!

Mmhhhh, Stevenski, this is coming out really nice!!!
I like your pics a lot, the contrast between the kit and the colour of the paper in the back is very nice.
BUT as stupid as i am i started to comment the layout of your post instead of telling you how fine you are working here!!!!
(It's like the mum who wanted to sent 20 bucks to her son but the envelope was empty and later on she mentioned "oh, i WANTED to sent the money BUT i already closed the mailer......")

Now, seriously, FINALLY, Superb detailling, accurate work and very nice metallic FX on the engine and gearbox!! The grain on the knob is killer.

Btw, i know about hidden details, i can tell you that........

I'm awaiting the accomplishment of your sexy-(oh äähh SIX-)wheeler!!

Yours
Jochen

I am so so close now. Really I am just biding my time for a shipment with the last part to arrive.

There were some decals left over that I couldn't really figure out at first what on earth they could be for. Finally I figured it out :)

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss141/tyrrell_p34/P34/p34_69.jpg

Kind of strange since there is no figure included in the kit!! LOL

But rather than throw them away and to use up the waiting time, I felt it was time for some fun - no diorama but some accessorizing instead!! hehe!

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss141/tyrrell_p34/P34/p34_70.jpg

The first step was rather gross!! You can imagine how it felt sawing of the guy's head and then drilling out his face

However, the orange decal stripe turned out to be less than useless - wrong scale I guess so I went the route of mini-masking (this thing is tiny!).

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss141/tyrrell_p34/P34/p34_71.jpg

I also cut of his feet to make so racing boots and his hands for gloves (flattened in heated pliers).
(I am very proud of that tiny 0.5mm blue stripe! :) )

Hi Steve,

great job all over ...

Do you cover the helmet with clear, the "Jody" decal looks rather "high" ?

Looking better everytime it's updated.

PS: Why didn't you simply put a driver in that seat?

Because I didn't want a driver in the seat. Simply. :D
