I have a 2001 Grand Am with a 2.4L Automatic. The car was running fine and I parked it in the garage. The next morning it would not start...turns over fine, starter and battery good. I pulled the fuel pressure regulator and gas is squirting through to the injectors. (Not sure if it is getting through them) Put a little gas in the throttle body and it still would not go. Pulled the plug wires and it has a spark, but appears a little weak. Scanned the computer and it has no codes. Cel never came on while it was running either. Where do i go from here?

Id check the fuel filter first if its not been replaced in the last 20k or so miles.

That weak spark could be from a bad coil(s) also be the ignition control module-ICM. These are prone to failure from excessive heat.

Also dirty - clogged injectors could cause it not to start.

And lastly and worse case your timing chain could have broken/jumped.

Good Luck

Thanks for the response. I just checked the compression #2 only has 30lbs. The rest are at 185...seems a little high. Shot some oil in the cyl ....still 30lbs. Timing chain looks good and tight. I am thinking maybe a stuck or bent intake valve. Are these interference engines?

I'm pretty sure its not an interferance engine ..... don't quote me on that tho i'd have to check at work on Monday.....either way your going to be pulling that head to find out whats going on,unless you know a friendly tech with a camera.

Pulled the head ....has 2 burnt exhaust valves on #2, Cam timing was good...chain etc did not jump. Seems like it should have started and run on 3 cylinders? Obviously it wasn't running fine with 2 burnt valves!

I think you will be back here again, after you assemble everything back. Those two valves probably will not make much difference in this case since they cant just burn over night and cause no start issue suddenly :headshake.
this is sensor or bad wire/connection related

Does anyone know if the 2001 2.4 uses an oil slinger on the crankshaft? I have a rebuilt cyl head installed and need to put the timing chain cover back on. Either this model did not use one or I lost it! crs syndrome has attacked me! The online parts books seem vague.

The technical term is a brain fart.

I just finished putting the new cylinder head on and it runs great....started on the first crank!!!! I am thinking maybe carbon was dropping out of the valve shroud area and sticking an intake valve open. Never heard of this, but it was filthy around the valve stems. The exhaust valves weren't fried just leaking slightly....should have had at least 65lbs compression. The timing chain seems a little noisy at idle, but smooths out after about 1200 RPMs It may be bleeding down with the lower oil pressure at idle??/ any thoughts? Thanks for everyones help!
