HELP!!! ingnition module location???GMC

so i've got a 97 1500 GMC, 2 wheel drive, v6 (i think w engine code) that keeps dyin on me(i can restart it but i dies agian shortly after) normaly it will last for about 10 mins but after that the timing between dyin varies:banghead:. i was told that it could be the ignition module, but i dont know where it is on the truck.( i was also told that some trucks dont even have one) so i'm kinda suck:shakehead...i'm not a dumb a**(for the most part) i work in a parts store as a drive most of the time, and i do all the work on my other truck (a ranger, my sister just gave me the GMC)(or is gonna)) so if you can be of any help I would be vary greatful...:biggrin:

Well, Firecracker, the first thing I would do is put it on a scanner. If you dont have one, AZ will scan it for free. get any codes. research those if any. The Ign Mod should be just above the left valve cover. It's held on by two small screws.

I replaced on on a 91 sierrra but it had a v8 and it was right near the distributor.

Never mind, yours is a 97 I thought you said 92, yours probably has coil packs, not sure, but it should be under the coil packs.

If there are no codes present (check engine light on) then the first thing I would do is check fuel pressure. The W engine is fussy about pressure. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? Once you verify that pressure is up to par and stays there even with the pump warm get it on a scantool and watch for any erratic readings. You can also clean out the EGR, they like to carbon up and stick, the MAF likes to get dirty and hurt performance, etc.

check for spark when it dies. on that vintage an ign mod failure will usually set a code 42 as well. cant count on the code setting but if the code is set that might verify your diagnosis and yes it is mounted under the coil packs.

well i know that on the v8 it is directly under the transmission fill beside the distributor . had the same problem with my v 8 changed the ignition coil seemed to help but had to change wiring harness to ignition coil some times you can spill transmission fluid on it and over time it will eat at the wires
