my transmission sounds funny everytime i drive my minivan, when it takes off it shifts but give a lil jerk then run fine after that and does it again when i slow down. what could be the probelm? i added fluid but same thing.

the button lights on my panel below the stereo for a/c , defroster, wiper for back window continously blinks, sometime they turn off but most of the time they blink. and i dont know if my ac is on or defroster is on or off.

last one is on the bottom tranny side front of the van there is a wire with white connector hanging, i dont have any idea where to plug it.

by the way, i bought the van from private party and he dont know the history of the van and problems. i like it and my wife and my kids love the van so if possible i wanna get it fixed as long its affordable.

any help and inputs will be great.

thanks,

I had the same problem with my 1999 Plymouth Voyager. You need to change your transmission filter. It's pretty easy to do by yourself. Just drop the pan and swap out the filter. Obviously you will then have to add some more fluid. After I did this with mine she worked much better, no more jerking.

you mean the whole transmission pan? if i do that then i will drain all my tranny fluid , right?

i never done it before but i will look into it

thank you

Dropping the pan to change the fluid and filter only replaces about 1/3rd of the fluid. The rest is trapped in the torque converter and cooler. If you want it all out disconnect the tranny cooler lines at the radiator and pump it out with it running. During the process you need to keep the fluid topped off to keep it from running dry. An alternative is to drop the pan to change the filter as normal. Drive it around a bit to mix the fluid. Next pump the fluid out the dip stick, refill, drive, and repeat 2-3 more times. You can get pumps at most auto parts stores for around $25.

A climate control calibration may fix the lights on the panel. Only do this if the A/C is working or you'll have additional flashing lights till the A/C is fixed: "Turn on the blower. Simultaneously push the top and bottom wiper buttons on the left side of the climate control panel for 5 seconds. All the lights on the panel will light up. Then two lights on the left side will alternately flash for about two minutes and you'll hear the ventilation modes cycle. When just the top light on the left side slowly flashes push that button and you're done. All lights should be out and you should be back to normal. This is the climate control calibration/test and it resets the climate system computer/module."

Can you post a picture of the wire? Put it on Photobucket.com then post a link to it here.

hello,

thansk for the quick response, i already replaced the filter and you were right i only have to put about 3 quarts of fluid and i believe it fixed the jerking problem, it run smooth and havent feel that jerk again. i have to ru it on the freeway when the weather is better and will let you know the outcome. but so far so good, am happy with it and thanks a lot for the help and saved me money.

it costed me $13.99 for the filter and the gasket from kragen and $12.00 for the fluid.
hopes this will help others with same problem as mine.

the connectors has two wires, looks to me it is just there for maybe some reason but i looked everywhere i can not find any place to plug it in, just the bottom of the starter, will take pic of it

thanks again

hello its me again, guess what? the jerk came back i raised the tranny just to see and feel how the tires spins and i did not see any indications of loose or anything that will cause it to jerk. i am suspecting its something different.

the thing is when i take off it shift then that jerk but continous to run fine after that, i checked for the axle play it seems ok but i dont know how much play is allowed. then when you slows down and downshift it jerk again ? what could be the problem?

if its internal shouldnt be continous and you can feel it if you spin the tires?

about the climate control, i have it done till the two left lights blinking now and stops there, i cant have it all gone, i took the battery out but i dont think it help. tell me if i m doing it wrong.

first i have 3 buttons on the left then 3 buttons to right bottom row(6 lights total)i turn on blower which is set to low/mid/high then press the top and lower button on the left for 5 secs till all of them lights up then alternate top left and middle to blink while in recycling mode. it never went to just one light blink at all, either 2 or 3 or all of them. i got it to where just the top left and middle left to blink. dont know what else to do. i am ready to bring it to the shop but go no money to pay for those expensive repairs,

please help

Reading the post you have on the thread above yours it states that you added Dexron fluid. I recommend that you get this fluid replaced ASAP as it does not have the proper friction ingredients and can or will harm the fricition plates in your tranny.

I recommend getting a case of ATF+4 fluid, a hose about 3 to 4 foot long, a few clear gallon jugs (Milk containers work well), remove the return line from the tranny or radiator transmission cooler, I believe the tranny line closest to the driver fender, put hose into clear container and start engine, watching container when approxiametly 3 to 4 quarts has pumped into container turn off engine add the approx. amount of new fluid into tranny, empty or change container and repeat procedure until 10 to 11 quarts of fluid have be replaced. This should remove all the old fluid from tranny and torque converter. Remove drain hose and install coolant line and warm engine to normal operating level and drive for a few miles then check fluid for proper level.

Hope this helps.

thank you for your response.

yes you are right. i read a lot last night and today to use the proper fluid and i checked again the label and it said use for cars that were serviced by dexron/mercon iii and ATF letering on it. no 3 / + 3 or + 4. so for sure i used the wrong Fluid type, i hope it will fix the problem of jerking soon i put the right fluid.

i will do that right away and do you know what size of the hose i have to buy?

one more thing, i did not have any luck resetting my climate control, now i have the top left & middle left lights blinking, is there any other way to reset it?

thanks for the help

hello

i finally drain and replaced the tranny fluid with ATF+4 and i hope i did it right, the jerking still there but what i dont understand is when i am at speed.. it doesnt jerk anymore even when i go up more speed not till i slow down again.

so i was thinking could it be the transmission mounts doing it? or speed sensors?

valves? shift cable adjustments

any inputs please.. im about to put the van for sale but wife said no.
please help

tnks again

I would drive it for a few days to see what it will do. I worked on friends van that did the same thing, found out that she had the tranny flushed and the incorrect fluid was installed. Changed the fluid and it took a few run cycles for the tranny to relearn shifting patterns.

ok i will do that , thought maybe you can suggest about this feedback i got from edmunds.com, he said about a speed sensor but which one? on the book it does show speed sensor but 2 of them: input (turbine)speed sensor & output sensor, how about the VSS vehicle speed sensor, where is it located?

-seems like there has been somethings in this transmission problem that were overlooked..-
-all of the transmission shift times are electronically controlled by the tcm...
-if the fluid is not burnt and a relatively reddish color and the it is atf4 at the proper level then the first thing should have been are the reprogramming procedures for harsh shifts on that model...
-since 1998 there have been at least two superceded reprogramming part numbers to flash the tcm with to correct this very same complaint..
-in this day in age attempting conventional and sometimes premature or unnecessary maintenance to correct a repair is risky and can become costly
-those models did have there share of transmission problems but most were corrected with new flash programming that change the shift patterns and timing to make them less harsh and jerky...

hello,

i know it will be costly but what i did is what i got from this forum suggestions and i ran out of any mor options.

when you mention reprogram the TCM , new flash programming the TCM which one really works best

and how can it be done? any more info would be nice and thanks
