Hillary Will's '07 NHRA Top Fuel Dragster

This is something I've been messing with for a while now, and just finally got enough progress to post. Once it warms up some more I can get the paint work started, but for now I've been doing other stuff.

This will be her '07 car using the most recent Revell kit, Slixx KB Racing decal sheet, HoK paint for the body work, and many other after market parts. As well as plenty of scratch building and updating.

Here's the real deal. She ran this scheme in both her rookie year of '06 and in '07. Her '08 car was totally different and I plan on doing her first win car from Topeka '08 once this one is finished.

http://images45.fotki.com/v1450/photos/1/174078/5693621/Will_Infineon2-vi.jpg

I started off with chassis and body mods. The Revell frame got quite a few bars replaced and updated. I also built a new roll cage shield from .010 sheet plastic and a lot of luck.

http://images42.fotki.com/v1466/photos/1/174078/4358658/P2159106-vi.jpg

http://images45.fotki.com/v1426/photos/1/174078/4358658/P2159109-vi.jpg

Once it was all primed I gave it the old "welded look" with Alclad's and chrome silver for the weld highlights. As far as the body work goes, I sanded it completely smooth, filled in all panel lines, as well as extending the cockpit sides. All of this was done to match the one piece body style Hillary's car used. I also reworked the air exits on the sides from Naca style to a more square style.

http://images47.fotki.com/v1477/photos/1/174078/4358658/P2169122-vi.jpg

Engine time!

I've probably been messing with the longest. The standard kit engine has a new SRP oil pan, SRP mags with aluminum tubing bodies to raise them up, TEM bell housing, and at this point had a CR resin blower in a bag.

http://images20.fotki.com/v366/photos/1/174078/4358661/P2149078-vi.jpg

http://images15.fotki.com/v269/photos/1/174078/4358661/P2149079-vi.jpg

BUT..........I decided I wasn't happy with the blower, or the pulleys. So, I popped them off and started over. I used a TEM blower with a separate blanket made from athletic tape. On top I used a MAS blower hold down plate, and on top of that I machined a new injector spacer from solid aluminum. Up front I added two things that I always wanted to do but never had the skill to pull off. One is the two support rods that support the front of the pulley snout. And behind that I made a plate that goes around the snout from thin aluminum, and added the yellow straps. I need to tweak my top buckle there, but I was really happy to get these details in there this time.

The other thing I wasn't happy with on my first engine was the pulleys. So I set out yesterday to machine three new ones as close to the reference pics I had as possible. The top upper and lower onces were knurled as they were being turned, and the top one was taken over to the mill to drill out the six holes for the bolts. Those were then filled with Scale hardware bolt heads. The idler pulley was the easiest of the three. Once they were all done they were mounted and slightly detailed.

http://images15.fotki.com/v337/photos/1/174078/4358661/P3019196-vi.jpg

http://images44.fotki.com/v1471/photos/1/174078/4358661/P3019193-vi.jpg

http://images45.fotki.com/v1450/photos/1/174078/4358661/P3019192-vi.jpg

And as you can also see, I've got the lower oil line and pump on, the hard fuel lines, and distribution block on, as well as the soft lines to the heads. I've got the super tall injector had CF decaled, it just needs to be cleared then I can get to the rest of the fuel system. These things are so complicated. For everything you think you've got covered, you find 50 more things that could be added! But they are a lot of fun.

Looking pretty kick a*!, I must say... I have not been around Top Fuel for quite a while now... Boy the motors have changed a bunch! Frame looks good, nice weld detail. I'll watch this one just to catch up on T.F. technology!:):):)

Good call on the blower change. Looks much better than the first attempt. Are the distributors aftermarket or did you make those? And how in the heck did you get the spark plug wires inside?

Top fuel and funnycar frames are made of Chromemoly steel alloy. Since they don't readily rust they are left unpainted to check regularly for cracks. One team member takes a rag of WD-40 and a dry rag and goes over the complete frame for a crack test.

I must agree to gionc and Robi J :

At the moment it is just a 2 star voting - to me this appears as enviousness of other modelers ...

So once more I ask the moderators: those ratings are only reasonable, when those guys, who do a rating, can be seen and the ratings are not given anonymously.

I'm not the guy that put 3 stars but I would like to say that this rating isn't clear enough...

When you get 3 stars out of 5 at school that doesn't mean you did a bad job !
(ok we're not at school but it's an example)

What is IMO stupid in this rating is to give a bad opinion by giving stars...!!?? :eek7:
Bad opinion should be 0 star (of course a 0 star rate different from no rate) and number of stars increase with enjoyment and quality appreciation.

When you are off topic at school (yes again my 2cents example) you get a 0 not a 3...!

I personaly think (but I can be the only one) that it's the rating mode that is unadapted, and maybe people are giving 3 stars out of 5 thinking it's a medium appreciation...

And moreover, even if it's sometimes deserved, what is the sens to badly note a model ???
That has no sens to me, it even should not be possible to give such a note, stars rating should only be a appreciation of quality range from good to exceptional for example.

btw most of the only rated threads are by 5 stars given so what should be understood for the non rated threads...??

Does someone else see that as I do...?

A bit of an update......

I reworked the kit rear wing. New upper element, along with two new end plates from .015 sheet plastic. It was then painted in HoK black in preparation for being covered with Carbon fiber decals.

http://images15.fotki.com/v227/photos/1/174078/4358658/P3059204-vi.jpg

The inside of the body was also shot black at this time.

http://images12.fotki.com/v204/photos/1/174078/4358658/P3059202-vi.jpg

Moving back to the engine, I modified a resin injector scoop to closer match the 1:1 version. This was then covered with KA models carbon fiber decal film being careful to match the directions of the real pattern, and then cleared with Dupont clear.

http://images47.fotki.com/v1473/photos/1/174078/4358661/P3059198-vi.jpg

Since I had replaced the kit clutch can and reverser, I needed a new one. I found a resin piece in my parts box that worked perfectly. It was shot with Alclad steel, detailed with the reversing lever, and installed. I also added a few lines to it, as well as a new turned aluminum drive shaft.

http://images44.fotki.com/v1449/photos/1/174078/4358661/P3059201-vi.jpg

And a few mock ups with the rear end and carbon rotors installed.

Thanks man.... More progress.

The kit front Weld wheels were based in Alclad black base, and then shot with two coats of Alsa chrome. The treads were sanded smooth, and the wheels installed.

http://images49.fotki.com/v1460/photos/1/174078/4358662/P3099229-vi.jpg

Moving back to the engine, the injector hat was installed, and the upper set of fuel lines were added using Pro Tech black plug wire, and Scale Hardware nuts. The blower belt was also decaled and installed.

http://images28.fotki.com/v1032/photos/1/174078/4358661/P3099221-vi.jpg

And I was finally able to get the base color down on the body panels. I started with HoK Silverwhite Pearl, and will begin the flame work soon.

With the base color laid down, I put some Tamiya masking tape over the decals and traced out the back section of flames. I then cut theses out, and applied them to the body on both sides.

http://images46.fotki.com/v1452/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3099220-vi.jpg

With the body masked I shot the rear part of the body and the mud flaps with HoK's amazing Candy Cobalt Blue Basecoat. Might be a bit dark for her car, but it's such a cool color I decided to use it.

http://images49.fotki.com/v1456/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119232-vi.jpg

And with the mask removed.......

http://images18.fotki.com/v347/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119240-vi.jpg

Next I back masked the blue flames and got ready for the fade.......

http://images47.fotki.com/v1473/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119243-vi.jpg

And with the blue covered I blended the silverwhite pearl into white. After the white dried a second, I blended in the lemon yellow, and finally a bit of flo. orange on the flame tips.

http://images49.fotki.com/v1456/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119245-vi.jpg

And with the masking all removed again, here we are. The back half is done!!!

http://images41.fotki.com/v1266/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119246-vi.jpg

http://images44.fotki.com/v1470/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119247-vi.jpg

http://images47.fotki.com/v1464/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119249-vi.jpg

With the back half finished, I moved to the biggie. The nose/body fade. Once again I used the decal flames as a guide and cut out the pattern and applied it to the body. And then covered everything behind it.

http://images44.fotki.com/v1448/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119252-vi.jpg

And then I started fading in the front flames. I started by going around all the edges with an awesome color, Sunrise Pearl. A very warm, kinda metallic honey color. Then I tried to carefully blend in all the fade of the red, in this case, another amazing HoK color, Candy Apple Red Basecoat. This color looks pretty cool as is, but it will come alive after the clear goes on. Once I had worked all around the flames, the rest of the front end was filled in.

http://images14.fotki.com/v371/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119253-vi.jpg

http://images29.fotki.com/v318/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119255-vi.jpg

And with the final masking removed, it finally started to look like Hillary's car!

http://images46.fotki.com/v1453/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119256-vi.jpg

http://images46.fotki.com/v1452/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119258-vi.jpg

http://images19.fotki.com/v365/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119261-vi.jpg

http://images49.fotki.com/v1458/photos/1/174078/4358664/P3119268-vi.jpg

My next step is to seal all of this in with a few thin coats of clear, and then do all the pin striping around the flames. I may do it with decals, or I may do them with paint freehand. Her flames had a really slashy, jagged kinda border, so I may be able to do them myself. Then I'll clear again, polish, and add the rest of the sponsor decals.

More progress......

I shot the two body panels with PPG clear a few days ago and wet sanded them down with 1000 grit to level every thing off. Then I busted out the old One Shot and got to work. I used Process Blue for the front flames, and Bright Red for the back set of flames. The real car had a real sketchy pattern so that helped me out.

Here's the real thing........

Well Clay,

to be honest, when I saw your paintwork -without knowing the real thing- I was impressed, but I wondered, how you will make the edges of the flames "sharp".

Your idea of pinstipping the flames is great, as you mentioned, the stripping is a little bit thick, but I think it is the result that counts, and you did a great job here.

Did you think about adding here and there a superfine black line close to the blue one, to create a "shadow effect"?

Thanks guys! Long time no post on this one....

I don't know why, but for some reason I dug old Hillary out last night and decided to fix some of the things that were bugging me on it. First thing was the top half of the engine was never quite totally level. I always kind of looked past it, but it was really bugging me. So I took apart everything from the blower up and cleaned all the surfaces, and rebuilt it being careful to get it much straighter this time. I still need to hook up a few fuel lines, but I'm much happier with it now. I had also been unhappy with the position the engine had in the frame. It sat crooked, too low, and the mags were going to interfere with the side panels of the body. So I took off the front engine mounts and made two new ones. Now the engine sits much nicer, and it straight all the way from the pan to the injector. Much better!

http://images52.fotki.com/v638/photos/8/174078/7967169/PA149994Z-vi.jpg

With the confidence flowing again, I started in on some other things that needed done. Mainly the interior. I made up two new inner panels, a new firewall, and a new electronics shelf from black sheet plastic. Once trimmed to fit, all were covered with KA CF decal film and installed. No need to do both sides since the body will cover most of it. Now I can get the seat going, electronics, and the rest of the interior detailing.

The blanket is in the event of an explosion. I think it does one of two things, helps to tether the supercharge in place, and also prevents the front and rear covers of the SC from "leaving" the car.

Clay, I've not done a lot of modeling here recently. KA carbon fiber film?

Just wondering how many pieces of Carbon Fiber decals did you use for the resin injector scoop, looks great.

Probably five I would say. I do the top first, then each side, then the front of the underside. Then one across the top of the openings with the weave going straight instead of angling. There may be a few tiny pieces to fill in here and there, but generally that is the order I do it in.

KA film is from China I believe. I picked mine up from Kevin at Strada Sports. There is an "A" pattern and a "B" pattern. I used the "A" I believe.

Thanks guys!

Continuing on with the front end, I modified the kit fuel tank and got it installed. I added weld seems and a new turned gas cap. It was then connected to the giant main fuel line with heat shrink sleeves, and MCG PE clamps.

Moving back I installed the steering shaft and started working on the seat. All the kit belts were sanded off, and then the entire seat was covered with more KA CF film. Once in place, I added a set of belts.

I also began working on the maze of electrical wiring. These are the two transducer boxes that will go between the Racepak box and all the sensor wires.

Hi Clay

One of the many things I like about this build is the attention to small details, such as the scale appearance of the electrical wiring. It looks exactly right.

What are you using? Is it pre-coloured, or do you paint it?

It looks like a decal that he made...?!?

This REALLY makes me want to jump back on my superman top fuel. However, I'm finding more and more paints dried up from my hiatus, plus the extra time just isn't there right now. So I will sit back and be content to watch this masterpiece unfold!

Thanks guys.

Russell, you are correct. They are decals. They are made by Archer Fine Transfers. Known more for their armor transfers. Theses are call "Surface Details" It's actually a resin printed on decal film. It's raised up and everything. The sheet I have has several sizes. Just trim them out, decal it and once dry, I brush paint over the weld with Testors Lacquer chrome silver.

They really work well on machined aluminum pieces such as oil tanks and radiators. You can add details to those pieces and not have to deal with glue or anything that might fog the metal.

Next time I use them I'll take some pics as I go along.

The cool, Clay, is how much all your works are noticeable from any other, and how it's appreciable your personal touch and taste, like a sign. I may be don't understand/like too much some subjects since they're often very far from our European's culture but I just love the skills.

This is just a guess, but did you make the Mopar charger which was in ScaleAuto last month?
your skill makes me loose mastery of the English language. Words cannot describe!

I've done articles on both my Mopar Nascar, and my Mopar Pro Stock for Scale Auto. They keep sending me work, so I keep taking it!

More progress on this one.....

I've got so many things going right now. I should have been working on the #24 car, but when the drag races come on on Sunday nights, I can't help myself. :D

Tires and wheels are from Pegasus. They are copies of the old So Real ones, but the tires are a lot better now. A lot thicker and more sturdy. I sanded off the bead locks and added a set of Pro Track gold ones to both the outside and inside. The shoe polish stripes were done with thinned out HoK white, and all the smaller markings were done with a fine brush and Tamiya jar paints. I did the Goodyear logos on the Alps. Once all the detail was done, they were sealed with two coats of Dullcote.

Insides of the rear wheels got some Mig gun metal pigment dusted inside to show some carbon dust.

I also added the rear calipers and ran the brake lines. When the wheel fits so tight, you only need to show half of the caliper.

I also got the last of the CF panels in for the electronics.....
