I am working on a 02 E-350 with a misfire that really only occurs under load. I pulled 2 codes, P0301 - Cyl #1 Misfire detected., and P0316 - Misfire detected at start up. It doesn't have a constant misfire it really only happens while driving - going up hill or take off is when it teds to hesitate and stumble a little bit.
Any Ideas?

I don't have a reply for you but just wondered if you fixed this problem? I have something similiar...

It could be a number of things, but go for the most simple solutions first. Replace the plugs and wires. Bad wires will make it miss out under a load.

These engines have a COP setup coil on plug. Pull the NO.1 coil and check for spark. If no spark replace the coil. Use a stethoscope and listen to the injector if its not working replace the injector. If you fix the no.1 cylinder rescan after deleting the codes. If both check out check the compression on this cylinder.

I have the same problem with the company truck I drive. It showed misfire #6 cylinder. I believe it to be a bad injector, but unfortunately, they are not going to repair it, because I will be getting a new one in a few days. I've had to live with it for almost a month now because of delays with the new truck, but I just got to tough it out until :)

Sounds like coil pack is bad... be careful pulling the plug.. They break easily.

I never have fixed the problem with this vehicle and it is no longer that urgent.I appreciate the advice from everyone. If and when it gets fixed I will update the info as I am sure it would help all to hear what the hard fix was. Thanks

replace #1 spark plug.cancel codes.road test to check for results. If problem still exists change coils from #1 coil and#2 coil.cancel codes and retest. If miss goes to #2 cylinder You know that that coil is bad.If problem still exists you will have to look farther.

First replace #1 spark plug.Cancel codes and road test for results. If you still have a miss and a code for #1 cylinder, switch coils for #1 cylinders, cancel codes.road test check for miss and codes. If codes show a miss on cylinder#2 replace that coil.If miss still occurs you have to look further.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Our company finally traded in that truck for an F550 with a 6.4L dual turbo. Fuel consumption is a little lower than expected but it more than makes up for it with it's awesome acceleration !
