I recently gave my car a tune-up(oil, plugs, wires, etc.),but something happened and i wound up running on 5 cylinders for a while. I'm back on 6 but i have a few problems...My car is idling between 1300-1600 rpm, sputtering a bit as i drive around town, and if i get on the accelerator at lower rpm (0~1800) the car will bog and backfire. I don't know if it would be EGR valve, fuel injectors, a sensor, intake problem, or a vacuum leak of some sort. Whatever it is it's really pissing me off and causing me to get some crap gas mileage.

A little more info., the car is a 5 spd with 170,000 miles. It will run better at lower temp, but as it heats up it sputters even more. Also, the SES light will come on if it sits at the high idle for a short while, but it showed nothing on diagnostic.

If anyone knows what this could be or can just eliminate a possibility I'd greatly appreciate it.

do you have a vacuum gauge? I would start there.

No I do not. Is there any other way to check for a leak?

yea, with a vacuum gauge lol. you can try the starting fluid method. while the engine is running, spray starting fluid in small amounts around various areas of the intake manifold and gasket areas. if it stumbles or surges when you spray an area, you found the leak.

I sprayed in every possible location and there were no changes. What should I try next? I think I'm going to hook up a diagnostic again just to make sure, but if it shows nothing, then what? How would I go about checking an injector or EGR valve?

...how do i check if an injector is bad?

I'd try disconnecting the battery for a bit, then reconnecting it and see if the problem persists after resetting the ECM due to loss of power.

Didn't change anything...:banghead:

When the car is cold it runs a lot better(still idles high, but still better), but once it runs a little while it sounds like its missing quite frequently. What other possible problems could this be, and how can I check for them? Somebody please help...

I think you have a random misfire, but that's just an educated guess. but before you go replacing the icm (ignition control module) get underneath and tap on the cat (while cold) and see if you hear any rattling inside. if so, change it, it could be the cause of all these problems.

If you wanna try the icm, you can easily find one in a junkyard to try out. I wouldn't spend the money on a new one until you can find out if it really is the problem, they can be pricey.

I second a misfire, make sure you're in the right firing order and that the plug wires are fully seated and not burned through again by the exhaust manifolds.

Would that cause such a high idle though?

p.s. my idle is slowly, but steadily, getting worse. Originally it was around 1300~1800, now it's 1800~2100

...oh yeah and my cat checked out good

Vacuum leak or leak past the MAF sensor.

you said ses light is on is it throwing any codes?

I went and got a diagnostic on it once, but nothing showed up. Then last week I had another guy I kno run one on it, and the code history showed like four diff. codes, but current wouldn't show anything. Guy that ran it thinks my ecu is going bad, but I don't know what to say about it.
