This is going to be a whistle stop OOB build. Looking at my stock of kits I thought it was time to make a few spaces and have picked out three kits which I have no desire to 'full detail' and this is one of them.

The car is from the 1997 RAC Rally and having opened the box I was a little dissappointed to find different wheels compared to the box picture which shows the 5 spoke tarmac wheels - the ones in the box are the more solid and narrower gravel wheels which don't look anywhere near as good. :shakehead

I then thought about making some alterations in order to replace these with a set from an old Toyota Celica I have in the spares box however the alterations were making my head hurt :screwy: so I decided to let them stay - I have another couple of Evo's to do and both have the five spoke rims on them.

As I mentioned at the end of my Porsche WIP this is going to be OOB, I will add a few little enhancements though but nothing at all major, I may have a little fun with the interior but that's it... no really!

So first up this is the kit, no grade up parts, transkits or etch sets (apart from the small set supplied in the kit)...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Mitsubishi%20Evo%20IV%20WRC/DSC01343.jpg

I have made a sound start already and have many of the smaller components finished - these are the front discs and suspension units - I added a couple of etched faces from an old etch set onto these - none were supplied in the Hasegawa etch fret which is suprising...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Mitsubishi%20Evo%20IV%20WRC/DSC01349.jpg

the underside is plain old white, as you know Im not a fan of 'out of the showroom' builds so I added just a hint of weathering to the underside, a little drybrushing into the corners and recesses is all that I did using a couple of shades of matt brown, taking care not to over do it...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Mitsubishi%20Evo%20IV%20WRC/DSC01348.jpg

and with some of the parts installed onto the underside...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Mitsubishi%20Evo%20IV%20WRC/DSC01345.jpg

rear suspension and brakes - I couldnt find a small enough set of etched disc faces for these so unfortunately they will have to remain plain...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Mitsubishi%20Evo%20IV%20WRC/DSC01346.jpg

finally, removed the plastic in between the front wishbones, a little suprising this was left in by Hasegawa...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Mitsubishi%20Evo%20IV%20WRC/DSC01344.jpg

as you can see this is flying along and I hope to have this done inside a month if no sooner. Im gonna have the spot lights on the front clear too as I have a spare set of clear lights lenses which fit nicely and I do want to spend a little time getting the finish on the shell looking good too.

More again soon chaps!

Even one of your OOB builds is great fun to watch. And it's always great to see another rally car being built!

I'll be following this closely.

I didnīt think you were about to start that soon. But everything looks promising and you seem to be off to a good start. OOB - I will believe that when I see this one done.

I wonder why these modelkit manufacturers have the guts to show the kitīs car with different rims than on shown on the box. That amazes everytime. And it seems to happen quite often.

I have the same kit and I was as disappointed as you when I saw the wheels were not the same as the box art. Nice start though, looking forward to seeing this one progress....:)

..we are, as they say, cooking on gas with this one...

if I can keep this going I should have this finished by next weekend all being well, anyway - paint is on and a day's polishing done, tried my damnest to capture the finish with the camera but with no luck - this is however one of the best finishes I have managed, just shows what a little time and effort can do...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Mitsubishi%20Evo%20IV%20WRC/DSC01354.jpg

the seats were given my usual treatment of embossing powder, rear of seats has some kevlar decal, belt material is my own and the belt hardware is from the Hasegawa set, I cant add the shoulder straps until the roll cage is in as I need to measure them out first...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Mitsubishi%20Evo%20IV%20WRC/DSC01355.jpg

dashboard -just simple grey primer followed by some semi gloss black for the panels and recesses, i will add some details to this once I have received an excellent looking book I found - its called Mitsubishi Lancer Evo by Brian Long and looks like it may be just the job - I will wait till that arrives before detailing the rest on the interior.

finally, a comparison of these pesky wheels - I just dont like them one bit!

Nice start Sean. I agree, those wheels (and tyres) are shocking.

Paint finish looks good and I'm liking the seats as well. Can't you swop over the wheels and use the ones from your picture or are they a different fitting or something...????

Nice start on this one !

Do you want to absolutely keep the car in tarmac version ?
Cos' I think It would be possible to replace the (bad joke :sly: :eek7: ) hasegawa gravel wheels by more realistic ones from Tamiya using the 99 mitsubishi parts...
At least the tyres, which would be nice and large enough...

Hi Steve,

they are about a third of the width again of the gravel wheels. The only way I could make them fit would be to remove the inner arch which would allow me to move the struts further in (if you know what I mean?) But as you can imagaine the work involved in that would be substantial!

I looked at modifying the struts somehow but there simply isnt anyroom to do it - when I positioning the wider tarmac wheels into the wheel wells the inner edge of comes into contact with the inner arch and the wheel is still protruding a good 4-5mm outside the body work - without serious modification the thing would end up loooking like a monster truck! :headshake

I will try and take some pics to show you what I mean.

Hi Phil,

I have the 99 kit (I think) - I will have a look at your idea but I think I am going to come up against the same problem still.

rallymaster
02-07-2009, 04:33 AM
Hmmm yes I didn't think to that but it must be the main problem, wheel arches are done for Hasegawa wheels...
but maybe gravel tyres and wheels would be a bit less large than the tarmac ones...?
I can try myself I don't have the Evo4 and in fact no Hasegawa lancer anymore (except the first one from 94 Safari I will try to improve a lot) especially because of their ridiculous inacurate wheels... :crying:
I don't know which solution you will apply to this problem but I'm sure you'll find how to do your best and the best possible to show us another great rally car !
good luck, I'll follow it :naughty:

The seats are very nice looking. And it really seems that you donīt loose that OOB-idea out of sight. But Iīd like to see the Tarmac-wheels on this build. That could be the beginning of some serious modification-action. And youīre not the oob-modeller to begin with - so go for it!

Now I see your dilemma. I didn't realize the work involved to change them. I have also another version of the Hasegawa Evo IV from the 1997 Catalunya Rally. This is pictured as tarmac wheels on the box art. I'm wondering now if maybe it has gravel wheels inside the box..??? It'll be disappointing if it has....

Great start, especially the seats. It's fun following along and seeing your skills at work in what you consider a simple build for you.

after picking up a couple of books about the Evo I am struggling to find any decent pics of the cockpit of the mark IV WRC car - can anyone point me in the direction of any at all? I am reluctant to just leave this bare and just want to add a little interest. All that remains on the car now is to put the interior together and add a few doo-dads here and there.

thanks in advance

I feel confused because I can't find anything about the Evo4... :disappoin
Although there are here and there some interesting views of the other Evos, nothing in the yearbooks, nothing in Rallycars from Klein... and nothing on my hard drive, too...
I thought and wished I could help but I can't, sorry...

seems like its a common problem then, cant find a single decent interior shot anywhere. A big thanks to Malscar for those three pics though, they are a start - but I think I will just have to use a little imagination and artistic licence...

oh and godfather... it will be OOB still yes (well nearly anyway!)

Remember me!!!!!

Hello all! A massive 3 years since I was last around and building kits... I won't bore you all with the gory details, however as I made some good friends on here a little explanation is in order for my sudden disappearance. In short, relationships, a complete career change and finally a family illness culminating in a bereavement... all crammed into just under two years... a testing time its been I can tell you.

So anyway enough already, the good news is in my time without the brushes and modeling knife, none of my kits reached ebay's halls of sale and are all intact and still all screaming 'build me'. So a fortnight ago I decided to finish the Evo (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=1078270) (3 years for an OOB build, not bad going eh???), I've also finished a Studio 27 Renault R202 (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=6976825#post6976825) which was also on the bench for that entire time (imagine the dust!!!!).

I have firmly got the appetite and desire back to build again and more importantly life is running on an even keel again (long may it continue).

Ive posted a couple of completed threads of the two finished cars, but they really were strictly done in a 'get em out of the way' kind of fashion. The new return to building really starts now in the form of Mansell's Ferrari F189 from 1989. It is going to be a build in the same mould as my Ferrari F310B, Lotus 99T and Lotus 25, full of details.

I'd love to hear from all the guys who I would converse with daily way back and hope you are all still well and building. A big thank you to all those who dropped me an email to ask where the hell I have been all this time over this period, if anyone asked questions regarding any of my builds that didnt get an answer I can only apologise (I know there were a few :shakehead)

It's really nice to be back

Sean :smooch:
