'97 Eighty Eight-Intermittent starting/stalling issues

I've searched thru some of your topics, and I'm glad I found this forum! There's a whole bunch of knowledge and info out there!!!

I'm on my 3rd Eighty Eight (2 1995's and my current 1997). 68K miles-3800 non SC
When engine is stone cold, will start 100% of the time, but, after driving, it's 50/50 chance of starting. It will crank over just fine---but will not start. Sometimes, it will start on the 2nd or 3rd attempt, but other times it will take 10 min. of trying to get it to run.
Also, occasionally while driving---it will "shut itself off"---maybe it will start/maybe not. Once it restarts, it runs like new---until it's next episode!
To make matters worse, it might go a week without acting up at all.


1) Fuel pump/strainer/filter brand new.
2) NO fuel pressure at regulator test valve when this happens BUT--I hear fuel pump run when I turn key to on!!
3) When car is running OK--it has 44 PSI of fuel at the test valve
4) No OBDII codes or C.E. light, EXCEPT an occasional P0336

Could the fuel pump run and not pressurize the system intermittently?
Crank sensor going flakey?

Any and all ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Given the P0336 code, 18x signal from the Crank Position sensor, have you taken a look at the wiring harness and connector for the CKP ? I have seen CKP's act like this when they are starting to go bad.

As far as fuel pump running and no fuel pressure now that is interesting. Unless the fuel pressure regulator is stuck open but I would think even then you would have some pressure reading.

Just some thoughts.

I forgot to mention, I checked the ground buss that other posts mentioned (the one near the driver side door jamb)---It was as clean as the day the General installed it...

I had a Toyota Camry that was acting similar. Could not solve it myself and resorted to taking it to the dealer after it stopped a couple of times out on the road. They ran it all day in the shop and determined the fuel pump was seizing when it got warmed up. New fuel pump solved the problem. However, I see you have already replaced that. Can you set it up so you can monitor fuel presure while driving?
