Removing EGR system?

Hey Everybody,
I have just bought a 1985 LTD crown victoria. It has the 5.0L. I need to get a new exhaust put on. My question is this: Can I remove the EGR system from the car. I'm talking about the air pump, egr valve and the tubes that run to the exhaust system. I noticed that the EGR valve has 2 metal tubes that run to the back of the heads. Can these be removed and blocked off? My buddy says the holes (left in the head after the tubes are removed) are threaded with a straight thread and I can put hex plugs in them. The reason I ask is because I want to have duals run from the manifolds back. I had an old chevy truck that I did this to (removal of the EGR system and cats) and had no problems whatsoever. This ford is different, and I don't want to do anything to affect the drivability. This is my daily driver. Is there any advantage to doing this? I'm assuming the engine will breath better, resulting in more power and better gas milage. This car has throttle body injection. Thanks.
