Porsche 917

Dear model enthousiasts

I’m new here so a little introduction about my WIP.
Half a year ago I decided to build a model car from scratch. After looking around I’ve got the idea of building me a Porsche 917.The main interest is the technical part of it and especially the engine.
My way of tackling this project :
Make a complete 3D drawing in a scale 1:1.
Resize it to 20%.
Make a 2 D print of all the parts.
Try to make them in a more or less similar material.
Assemble to finish the car.
Yes I know. It will take a lot of time but that doesn’t bother me.
I’m here on the Automotive forum to see if there are more people who are doing more or less the same thing and share some knowledge. I also hope to find here some help with one of the difficulties of getting the right information.

Wow that's amazing work!! I love the work you've done on the pistons and the engine assembly. Must have taken ages! It looks really stunning but I would not have the time or patience for this. Hopefully you'll keep any updates frequent. Best of luck! :)

Impressive. You've got excellent 3D modeling skills. What software did you use?

Looking forward to see the updates! :)

ZZZZlurrp. I would like to own the 3d file of the frame, check if it's right, and solder me one by tubes.... I guess I must design it by myself uh? Well, that's right :D

Awesome job but we're so used to see a 917K in 24 that would be great do it in 1/12 or even 1/8... what a cool idea...

Sorry 1:5 will do ?.
It's more easy while you can use the normal din values for threading. M5 --> M1, M6--> M1.2 and M8 will become M1,6

Nice 3d work on that 917. Do you think about to put your model in Virtual Racing Game for PC liek example GT Legends?

I suppose any scale would do. It shouldn't be difficult to scale it down to 1:12 or 1:8.

That's true, it is practical from this POV, however it will be a stand alone in this scale.

Any chance you tell us the software you use as well as what format you save the parts and assemblies?!

Cheers! :)

Holy cow! Where are you getting your data from? And how difficult to get it into the modeling s/w?

Welcome aboard rhb!

That's a very impressive project you have yourself there. You asked if anyone else may be doing something similar...well, it's my ambition to build a 1/8th 917 when my RS60 is finished (OK it's years away yet). To that end about a year ago I started to draw up 2D 917 plans in Illustrator but I discovered that the various 'official' Porsche blueprints varied considerably when they are all layered together. The problem is made more difficult as Porsche had various wheelbases for the 917. I've shelved the project for the moment as I found it very difficult to find accurate data for things like the bottom edge of the windscreen which I'm sure is horizontal. I've looked at a fair number of real 917's and it's diffucult to tell with the human eye but I'm sure it will look wrong on a model if inaccurate. The front engine mount is a mystery to me too!

I had a good look at your Dutch thread and your engine side elevation made me laugh as you've worked out the data for the cylinders and studs, here's my attempt which is not quite correct at the moment:

The most of the data are more or less technical drawings everybody can find on the web. And of course a lot of pictures of disassembled parts. But you have to know where to look for.

I'm still wondring why is everybody talking about the modeling. It's only a tool and not a goal. It's not more difficult than make a technical drawing
on a drawing board.

just one question.. when you're finished, will it work?

Running like a real engine no. I hope it will not have too much friction to turn it by hand.

just wondered if you had seen the video clip of a guy in italy who built a 1/6 scale I believe fully working Ferrari 330 P4 - it will probably interest you. You should find it on 'you tube' fairly easily.

This project is something else... best of luck with it!

Never heard about that one, but there is a 1/3 scale 312PB if I'm not mistaken.

Yes I did a while ago. But 3 years of drawing and 12 years of building is to much for me. There is more in the world than only one car.

Oh dear.

Just when I thought projects couldn't get any crazier on AF, something like this comes along.

This is going to be awesome and a half! Can't wait to see how it comes along.
