What's the difference at each end of a instrument cluster

On my 97, I don't have gauges, just idiot lights. I can get a instrument cluster that has gauges on it.
I am wondering what's at each end of the connection? Does each cluster have the same connections? One plugs into the cluster that goes to a light, while the same goes to one with a gauge?

What about the other end? Example; Is the temp sending unit the same, regardless of what's at the dash end?

Can I just put in a instrument cluster with gauges in where one was with lights? What's all involved?

Hope this makes scene what I'm trying to say.
Chris.

Not sure about the instrument cluster, but the engine sending units are different for idiot lights and gauges. One is just basically an on/off switch, and the other is a resister unit.

This is true. I know that on the previous gen, that to add the upgraded cluster you would have to add a temp sender and an oil sender and then wires to the cluster. Its not a direct plug and play.

Wow, even the wires? Looks like I have to keep the idiot lights. Wish I could find a person who did it.
Thanks for the replies,
Chris.
