I have a 1996 Chevy Z71 the alternator went out,I bought a new one and replaced it.I also went ahead an put a new distributor cap and button on and changed the spark plugs,here's the thing,I started the motor and every light on the dash is on,the motor is skipping and the positive battery is getting very hot.Can anybody help me fix this???

Start with the simple things re-check your wires on the alternator, spark plug wires to correct cyclinders, re-check areas that you may have been leaning on or in when changing plugs. You are sure that it is the correct amperage alternator for your vehicle ? Was anything else done to the engine ? Are there any blown fuses. Check the fuseable link from the alternator to the positive side of the battery for continuity with an ohm meter.

Also make sure your battery terminal and post are clean and free of corrosion
