hey whats up everyone im new here. my friend has a 99 crown victoria 4.6 lire SOHC that has been sitting for 3 months. we went to start it up and of course the battery was stone dead couldnt even jump start it. so we installed a new one and tried again but it would just crank over but not start. I noticed his fuel gauge was low so we went and got 3 gallons of fuel and tried it again. Its still doing the same thing. the car ran fine before he parked it but now it doesnt want to start. im heading up there tommorrow morning to try to get it started. im gonna check a few things i just dont know where a lot of things are on those cars. like the fuel pump relay, inertia switch and the test port for fuel pressure. is there anything else i should check on those motors for no starts? is has ignition coils on it so im not too sure how i would check for any spark. appreciate any help

Check for spark, check for fuel, and check for air...the air comes through the IAC, if you suspect the iac, hold the gas pedal down just a bit to let air pass through the throttle body. otherwise, are the keys PATS keys? (Do they have the chips in them) Just FYI....DO NOT UNPLUG THE INJECTORS! those connectors almost ALWAYS break! TO check for spark, the testers that parts stores sell are quite efficient, and by far the safest way to test without the possibility of sending 50,000 volts rushing through your hand, which kinda hurts....Those testers don't cost a whole lot, and are a good tool for almost any car. I am a ford technician, and I still use the one I got from Advanced Auto Parts for like $15 after 2 years....The inertia switch shouldn't have tripped unless you did something to it, and you should be able to hear the fuel pump run when you turn the key to ON. I have seen mouse damage to those cars where the little jerks chewed through the entire engine harness causing all kinds of problems, so check for evidence of mice.

P.S. This is why you start the cars you store at least every month and let them run for about 30 min.

thanks for all the info. i went back yesterday morning to check out the crown vic. i turned on the key and listened to the fuel pump heard nothing so i had a spare relay and replaced the fuel pump relay. still heard nothing. so i then squirted a little ether in the throttle body car started right up and shut down a few seconds later. started it again with the ether and held down the accelerator and it shut down slowly again. then i beat on the gas tank and still shut down. you think his fuel pump may have locked up since he ran the car low on fuel several times and this time let the car run out of fuel?

If you put a known good replay in there, then the problem may indeed be the pump, try a test light, or better yet a headlamp as a test light in the circuit to make sure current can get to the fuel pump. ( it only takes a few strands of wire to get 12volts on a multimeter or to make a test light turn on) but a higher amp device light a bulb takes more power. If you can unplug the closest connector to the pump and insert a bulb/test light. If you dont have either, use a multimeter. A good visual inspection of the wires will PROBABLY tell you if there is anything wrong, but no guarantees. The fuel pumps on cars depend on the fuel level to cool the pump (as wired as it sounds depending on a flamable thing to cool something) which is why its not good to run a car below 1/4 tank in the summer heat. But if the car started with ether, its a fuel delivery issue. BTW, dont use ether in newer cars, it's too flamable and can cause damage to emission systems if used for prolonged times. Use carb cleaner, or even wd-40 works.

thanks for the info ive told my friend several times not to let the car run low on fuel because like you said the fuel keeps the pump cool but he did it anyway. i dont like using ether especially on these new cars. i work on diesel truck and buses and we use it sometimes as a last resort. well he is just gonna get the car towed somewhere where someone can check it out indoors and fix it. thanks again for the info appreciate it:thumbsup:

Also check the inertia switch in the trunk on drivers side. Make sure the red button is pushed down on it.
