The transmission is good, but I'm having engine troubles.

Symptoms:
With the car in park, if I slowly apply increasing pressure on the gas pedal, the engine's RPM increases until I reach close to the floor. When the gas pedal hits the floor, the engine starts to bog and act like it is going to stall.

Up hills, I have to be very light on the gas. Acceleration is also poor because more than half way on the pedal in drive makes the engine bog. It is worse on a hill.

I got this code after a few days of driving when the check engine light came on (and stays on): P0401 EGR recirculation insufficient flow.

Any ideas? The mechanic wants to try the fuel filter. Does increasing revs until I hit the floor (and then bogging) sound like fuel starvation?

When was the last time you had the fuel filter replaced ? If it has been a long time can't hurt.

On the P0401, do you have the metal DPFE valve or the black plastic type ? Also the EVR solenoid could be bad causing no vacuum to reach the EGR valve when commanded to do so.

Thanks for the information on the DPFE/EGR valve.

Before working on the exhaust recirculation thing, I changed the fuel filter. The car is running nicely now with the new fuel filter. I can floor it without it cutting out now. :)

I cleared the code with my scanner to turn off the check engine light. The old fuel filter was pretty clogged (evident when blowing through it). Could a bad fuel filter cause a P0401 code (EGR)?

There was a lot of crud coming out of the gas line when I pulled off the old filter (and replaced it).

Right after replacing the fuel filter, I was able to floor the engine without it bogging-it revved up like it should. After about five miles of driving, the problem is back. The engine is bogging when floored. Is the gas tank spoiling fuel filters?

Change the DPFE if u have oneit will cost u like 35 $ also check for the fuel pump pressure, and check ur injectors with a noid.
